The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah etched his name in the record books on Tuesday (27th August). The secretary of the Indian cricket body, which is the largest in the world, became the youngest-ever chairman in the history of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Jay Shah was the sole candidate in the race for the chairman of the International Cricket Council. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary was elected unopposed as he will be taking charge of global cricket from 1st December. He will take a position at 35 years old.
As per the reports Jay Shah had the backing of 15 out of the 16 members of the International Cricket Council including Cricket Australia and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). While 15 members extended their support to Shah, the Pakistan Cricket Board, who was the 16th member, played a mute spectator during the entire process.
As per the reports in News18, it is learned that the Pakistan Cricket Board didn't say a single word. The source close to developments stated that Shah had huge support from other members but nothing came from the PCB. He explained:
"There wasn’t any word from PCB. Not that it was required because Shah had overwhelming support from the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator during the entire process."
Jay Shah, who is in the last year of his tenure as BCCI secretary, will now have to relinquish his post. He will be the Chairman of the International Cricket Council for three years and one of his major assignments will be to stage the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and then Cricket in the Olympics 2028.
With Jay Shah's appointment as ICC Chairman, the changes have already started to float even though he hasn't joined the post. Two senior employees Claire Furlong and Chris Tetley might have to make way for someone else.
There is a thorough investigation underway into the delivery of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.
With cricket poised to make its historic debut at the Olympics in 2028, we stand at the precipice of a transformative era - Jay Shah
After he was appointed the chairman of the head coach of the International Cricket Council, Jay Shah talked about his desire to see Cricket making its debut in the Olympics. He said that it would be his privilege to lead the ICC during his period. He explained in an official statement
"With cricket poised to make its historic debut at the Olympics in 2028, we stand at the precipice of a transformative era. This juncture is not merely a milestone, it’s a clarion call for all of us involved in this magnificent sport. It is my privilege to lead the ICC during such an exciting period in our shared journey."
Shah as a secretary of the BCCI did a great job for Indian cricket. Apart from making a massive increase in the financial status of the governing body, he also launched the Women’s Premier League. He also announced equal fees for both Men and women.
Under him, a new National Cricket Academy (NCA) was built and India successfully hosted the most successful World Cup ever.
He also made Test cricket a priority and took some strict actions on players who weren't keen to play the longest format of the game.
