Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer recently responded to the criticism he received after a few failures in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that he felt ‘angry’ about the criticism, but believed that his time to shine would come.
Shreyas Iyer began the World Cup campaign with a duck against Australia and recorded low scores against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England. However, the batter scored 50+ runs in the last four matches, including centuries against the Netherlands and New Zealand.
Wasn’t Able To Control Them Into Big Ones – Shreyas Iyer
In a conversation with broadcasters Star Sports, Shreyas Iyer admitted that he didn’t get an ideal start to the tournament, citing missed opportunities to convert starts into significant scores. Iyer revealed that he remained confident, despite facing negative comments.
“I didn’t perform well in 1-2 matches at the start of the World Cup. I was getting the starts but wasn’t able to convert them into big ones. But if you look at it (the stats), I was not out against Afghanistan and Pakistan, and then I had two bad innings.”
“Then, people started saying that he had a problem. Inside, I was very angry, I was not showing it but I knew my time would come and then I’d prove myself. And it has come now, at the right time,” Iyer told Star Sports.
Shreyas Iyer scored 105 runs off 70 deliveries, helping India reach a total of 397 runs in 50 overs. In response, the Kane Williamson-led team was bowled out for 327 runs. The Men in Blue secured their berth in the final of the marquee tournament in Ahmedabad.
Need Better Thinking From Shreyas Iyer – Yuvraj Singh
Earlier, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh criticized Shreyas Iyer, emphasizing the importance of the No. 4 batsman handling pressure during innings rebuilding. Yuvraj questioned the decision of Shreyas Iyer to bat at the crucial position in the batting lineup.
“No 4 batsman has to absorb the pressure!! Need better thinking from @ShreyasIyer15 when the team is trying to rebuild their innings ! Still don’t understand why @klrahul is not batting at no 4 ! After scoring a 100 against Pakistan! Dropping @imVkohli might cost Australia big time, don’t drop the king because he can take the game away. Game on !!,” Yuvraj posted on ‘X’.
