Former India wicket-keeper batter Deep Dasgupta has brushed aside the most important topic of Indian cricket, which is the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The two stalwarts of the India National Cricket Team have been in the headlines over the future of whether they will be featuring in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027.
After Virat and Rohit performed in the recently concluded series against the England National Cricket Team, which the Men in Blue lost 1-2 despite the good performance from two of the most experienced cricketers. The cricketer-turned-commentator Deep Dasgupta has asked the management and the selectors to maintain an equal parameter for all the cricketers.
Deep Dasgupta urges collective responsibility beyond Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
The former batter, while speaking on his YouTube channel, also discussed that Team India captain Shubman Gill should continue to perform as he has in the recent few series, as there should not be any questions surrounding him. He also added that Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Gill will be given more chances due to their consistent performances.
"Everyone has to perform, not just them, with 14 months left for the World Cup. God forbid Shubman Gill doesn't score runs in the next two series. There will be questions asked even about his place in the side despite him being the captain. So performance is mandatory for everyone."
"Yes, some like Rohit, Virat and Gill deserve a longer rope with more chances because of their performances for an extended period of time. So they will get more chances than someone else."
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad get a chance?
There are players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and many batters who have been doing well in List A games and also in some ODI games when given chances, but have failed to secure a permanent place due to Virat and Rohit, though they also have some pressure behind their backs.
Recently, Yashasvi Jaiswal performed in the Afghanistan series as he was added as a replacement for Virat Kohli, who was injured in that series. But despite scoring a hundred, he was dropped for the England series as soon as Kohli came back into the side, and Gaikwad has also been performing well in the List A matches.
"They will have to perform"- Deep Dasgupta on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Deep Dasgupta also mentioned that it is not only the responsibility of RO-KO to constantly perform and be put under pressure ahead of the major tournament. It will be the responsibility of the whole side, especially the batters, who keep on performing with nearly 15 months left for the World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
"There is no need to constantly isolate Rohit and Virat. They will have to perform like everyone else. So it's not a debate about Rohit and Virat. It's a debate about everyone, all of whom need to keep performing, with less than a year left for the World Cup. So leave them (Rohit and Virat) alone. Don't treat them separately," said Dasgupta.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are possibly set to be seen next in the upcoming ODI series against West Indies, as they only play the ODI format, having retired from the Test and T20Is.
