Shubman Gill‘s Test form went from bad to worse as he endured yet another poor outing in the red-ball format. The under-pressure right-handed batsman failed to get going once again as he was dismissed cheaply in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against England in Vishakhapatnam.

Things have not gone as he would have liked after he asked to be India‘s No. 3 once Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped. Before the ongoing Test, he failed to score more than 35 runs in an innings in 10 of his last 11 innings in the red-ball format.

Since the century in the Ahmedabad Test against Australia in March last year, he registered scores of 13, 18, 6, 10, 29*, 2, 26, 36, and 10 before getting the chance to bounce back in the ongoing series. The right-handed batsman would have fancied his chances of returning to form in familiar conditions but has failed to do so far.

Fans slam Shubman Gill:

In the first Test of the series, he registered scores of 23 and 0 as India lost the game by 28 runs while chasing 231. In both the innings, he was dismissed by debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley. He faced severe criticism for his poor show in the game and there were also calls from several quarters to drop him from the playing eleven.

However, the team management showed faith in Shubman Gill and retained him in the playing XI for the ongoing Test. Unsurprisingly, all eyes were on the Punjab star when he walked out to bat after captain Rohit Sharma’s dismissal. However, he ended up squandering another opportunity and returned to the pavilion after scoring 34.

The right-handed batsman made a positive start and was looking in great touch before being dismissed by veteran James Anderson. He went for a forward defence but ended up edging the ball to the wicketkeeper who took a good diving catch behind the stumps. Anderson has now dismissed Gill five times in just seven innings. As soon as he was dismissed, the fans took to X to slam him once again.

Here are some of the reactions:

Talking about the game, India were on 103 for 2 at lunch on day 1. Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. He and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 40 runs for the first wicket before debutant Shoaib Bashir dismissed the India captain for 14. It was followed by a 49-run stand between Jaiswal and Gill.
