Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif lauded the batting efforts of Deepak Chahar as he helped India seal a victory in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in Colombo.

Coming in to bat at the score of 193-7, Deepak Chahar forged an 84-run stand with Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the 8th wicket, and took India over the line to claim an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series. He scored 69 runs off 82 balls in a knock laced with 7 fours and one six.

Mohammad Kaif took to social media to highlight that Deepak Chahar must have learned things about batting and finishing from MS Dhoni at the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL in the last few seasons. Kaif felt that the Agra-born players bring a “bit of mohalla cricket” (unorthodox style) in his game to the international level.

“Deepak Chahar showed today he is a sharp and smart fighter. He is mentally strong and very entertaining – he brings a bit of mohalla cricket to the international field. Playing with the world’s best finisher Dhoni at CSK also helps,” Kaif wrote on Instagram.

Virat Kohli praises Deepak Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav

Regular captain Virat Kohli, who is in England for the Test matches, heaped rich praises on the side for winning the game after looking done and dusted at one stage in the chase. Kohli particularly mentioned Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar for their efforts.

After India had lost the top three, Yadav joined hands with Manish Pandey to keep the scoreboard ticking. Both batted at a strike rate of more than a hundred before Pandey and Hardik Pandya were dismissed in quick succession. Krunal Pandya supported Yadav with his gritty knock.

Yadav got out for 53 runs off 44 balls; Krunal followed him to the dressing room after scoring 35 crucial runs. From thereon, Chahar and Bhuvneshwar took over with a fine partnership.

“Great win by the boys. From a tough situation to pull it off was an amazing effort. Great to watch. Well done DC and Surya. Tremendous knocks under pressure,” Virat Kohli tweeted.
