A historic announcement is expected during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Australia next month, with the Big Bash League (BBL) set to make its India debut. In a landmark moment for both India and Australia, Chennai is likely to host the first-ever Big Bash League match.
Cricket Australia’s idea to launch BBL in India to attract the new crowd has created massive excitement, but a few important approvals are still pending before the official announcement. Amid the India talks, Nahid Rana was offered Adelaide Strikers deal.
PM Narendra Modi set for historic BBL announcement in Australia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Sydney from July 8 to 10, where he is likely to make the Big Bash League announcement. This is about the one regular-season BBL match to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
According to reports from 7Cricket journalist Tom Morris, Modi is set to formally announce the first BBL match in Chennai. Morris posted, X: “Indian PM @narendramodi is expected to be in Sydney July 8-10. And it is there that he is set to formally announce the first game of the BBL season in Chennai. The match will likely begin at 8:30-9 pm AEST, which is mid-afternoon in Chennai.”

Chennai emerges as front-runner to host first Big Bash League match but weather could become a major challenge
The idea has been under discussion for some time. Cricket Australia reportedly held talks with the BCCI and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), and they had a positive talk. A five-member team from Cricket Australia traveled to Chennai during the Chennai Super Kings' final home game of the IPL 2026 season to inspect the stadium and review the arrangements.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also present at the venue during the visit. However, the idea is not fully complete yet. Government-level discussions are still going on, and several operational matters still need to be sorted out before the match gets final approval.
Weather is another challenge. The Big Bash League is normally played in December, which is also the period when Chennai can receive heavy rainfall because of the winter monsoon. That means scheduling the BBL match carefully will be extremely important.
Perth Scorchers likely to be part of the historic match
There is also speculation that defending champions Perth Scorchers could feature in the historic game, although no official confirmation has been made. For Cricket Australia, taking the BBL to India could be a huge opportunity. With millions of fans, India offers massive commercial value, stronger sponsorship opportunities, and a chance to grow the league's popularity even further.
If everything goes well, this could become one of the biggest cross-border cricket collaborations ever seen between the two nations. However, the BCCI has not yet made any comment regarding the possible BBL match but gave big signal on India's Olympic T20 team.
Earlier, Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said that selling stakes in Big Bash League teams is the best way to secure the future of Australian cricket. He also said the plan has received strong support from the league's broadcast partners. Greenberg had stated, “The potential is vast, but we have to have an eye on the long-term future.”
