Former Indian chief selector Sarandeep Singh has been amongst the ones to raise questions on India’s squad for the ICC World Test Championship final. India and New Zealand will lock horns in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship against New Zealand in Southampton. Sarandeep Singh feels that Prithvi Shaw could have given India the brisk starts they required and should have received the nod.

Prithvi Shaw has sparked a resurgence in his batting after being dropped midway from the Australian tour. The right-handed batsman topped the run-scoring charts in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year and was amongst the highest run-getters in IPL 2021. While Shaw’s Test career might not appear exceptional, he still averages 42.38 in five Tests and with age on his side, he could turn things around quickly.

BCCI’s 20-man squad has four opening batsmen in KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill. Of those, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are likely to open in the World Test Championship final and the subsequent five-match Test series against England. The Indian team will depart for England on the first week of June.

He has corrected his technical flaws also, and look how he played in the IPL: Sarandeep Singh

Sarandeep Singh remarked that Prithvi Shaw could become a swashbuckling batsman like Virender Sehwag and he does not deserve to sit out early in his career. The 41-year old pointed out that the youngster has corrected the technical flaws after a horror Australia tour and played well in IPL. Singh also called for backing Shubman Gill.

“He has the potential to do what Sehwag did for India. You can’t sideline him so early in his career. He has scored tons of runs in domestic cricket after being dropped post the Australia tour. He has corrected his technical flaws also, and look how he played in the IPL. You have to back a talent like Shaw and even someone like Shubman Gill for that matter,” Singh said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
