Young opener Prithvi Shaw is expected to be absent for the first two matches of Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji Trophy. Prithvi Shaw’s name was absent from the 27-man probables list selected by the Mumbai selectors on Monday for a preparatory camp for the event.

Prithvi Shaw is in the process of recovering from a knee injury that he sustained during his county stint with Northamptonshire. He has been out of action for the last four months. He recently started batting practice in the nets at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Prithvi Shaw Will Miss First Two Ranji Matches – Raju Kulkarni

Chief selector Raju Kulkarni confirmed that Prithvi Shaw will miss the initial two matches against Bihar and Andhra. Kulkarni expressed that Raghuvanshi and Saxena should participate in the Mumbai under-23 team for the Col CK Nayudu Trophy to gain valuable experience.

“Yes, Prithvi will miss our first two Ranji matches, against Bihar (in Patna from January 5), and Andhra (from January 12),” Kulkarni told TOI on Thursday.

“We want Raghuvanshi and Saxena to play for the Mumbai under-23 team in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy and get some runs under their belt,” said Kulkarni.

Prithvi Shaw struggled to score in the IPL 2023 season, managing only 106 runs in eight innings for the Delhi Capitals. Despite the disappointing campaign, Delhi Capitals management retained the young opener for the upcoming season of the world’s richest league.

Before his knee injury, Shaw displayed exceptional form for Northamptonshire in the domestic one-day competition, amassing 429 runs in four innings with an average of 143 and a strike rate of 152.67. The batter smashed two centuries, including a remarkable 244-run knock.

Batting Has Been A Big Concern For Us – Raju Kulkarni

The MCA’s selection committee, coaches, support staff, office-bearers, and the CIC engaged in a comprehensive 15-hour brainstorming session on Monday and Tuesday to address the senior team’s subpar performance in white-ball tournaments this season.

Raju Kulkarni mentioned that they specifically met with eight players to gather valuable feedback, as batting has been a significant area of concern for the team. The extensive session aimed to analyze the issues and seek insights directly from the players involved.

“We met eight of our players, especially our batsmen since batting has been a big concern for us. We wanted to take their feedback too,” Kulkarni revealed.

Mumbai has faced challenges in securing the Ranji Trophy title since their last triumph against Saurashtra in the 2015-16 season. Mumbai has historically dominated the Ranji Trophy, boasting a record 41 victories. Notably, no other team has won the title more than 10 times.
