With Indian opener Prithvi Shaw registering yet another single-figure score, former Indian batting great Sunil Gavaskar has called for his axing. Prithvi Shaw saw his stumps disturbed again on the second day of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide to hand the hosts an opening. Sunil Gavaskar opines that India should send Shubman Gill to open in the second Test.
Prithvi Shaw has scores of 0 and 4 in the two innings that he has batted so far. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have brutally exposed Shaw’s flawed technique, sending the ball to send his stumps clattering through the big gap between his bat and pad. It looks very much likely that Shaw could face an axe in favour of Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill, who opened in the second warm-up match against Australia A with Shaw, has registered telling scores of 43 and 65 in the first and second innings respectively. Gill also has an outstanding first-class record to back his reputation. Thus, he could be the most likely choice if India do not choose to persist with Prithvi Shaw.
Sunil Gavaskar told journalist Vikrant Gupta that Shaw, who has technical problems, must stay out of the side, paving the way for Shubman Gill to open in the second Test. Gavaskar also pointed out that Gill plays the same role for his state side of Punjab.
Below is Vikrant Gupta’s tweet underlining Sunil Gavaskar’s words:
SUNIL GAVASKAR ON PRITHVI SHAW: ‘Prithvi has technical problems, should be dropped in the next Test’ – Sunny bhai wants Shubman to open if he opens for his state Punjab (which he does) @aajtak #IndvsAus #Adelaide @PrithviShaw @RealShubmanGill
