Former England cricketer Mark Butcher has said that Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were already on their final warning before the recent nightclub incident. Butcher believes the controversy has put significant pressure on the team management as the ECB considers disciplinary action for breaching team protocols.

The incident took place on June 8, after England's victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation into the early-morning nightclub altercation ahead of naming the squad for the second Test, which is set to begin on June 17.

They Were on Their Last Chance - Mark Butcher on Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson

Speaking to Wisden, Mark Butcher believes Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were already in a vulnerable position before the recent nightclub controversy. The former England batter said that the incident has raised serious concerns, especially given the disciplinary issues that affected the team during the Ashes.

"Unfortunately they were on their last chance. All we know is that there was a kerfuffle, they were past the curfew and that Stokes is potentially considering stepping down. We don't know what the ECB are going to do. We don't know whether Atkinson is going to get a suspension. But none of this stuff is concrete. But all it does Cam is it gives you an idea as to how damn close all of them were to losing their jobs at the end of the Ashes."

The ECB has confirmed that the Cricket Regulator has been informed about the curfew breach. The incident reportedly involved Stokes and Atkinson in an altercation with members of the Saracens rugby club at the Rex Rooms on King's Road in Chelsea.

Reports have since suggested that Stokes could lose the Test captaincy following the investigation. The England skipper is also reportedly considering retirement from international cricket.

They've Lost the Privilege of Being Able to Do That - Mark Butcher on England's Team Culture

Mark Butcher said that celebrations after a Test victory were common during his playing days. The former England batter pointed out that off-field incidents have changed how teams are expected to behave.

"My God, the amount of times we went out and got absolutely hammered after a Test match win. That's what you do after Test matches, particularly when you've got a 10-day, 11-day stretch between then and the next one. But unfortunately, they've lost the privilege of being able to do that because of what happened previous."

England's latest controversy came despite an impressive win over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. The hosts successfully defended a target of 254 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Gus Atkinson played a key role in the victory, finishing with seven wickets in the match. The fast bowler claimed a brilliant five-wicket haul in the final innings as New Zealand were bowled out for 138, helping England secure a comfortable win.

Punishments Will Be Flying and Heads Will Probably Roll - Mark Butcher on England Controversy

Mark Butcher believes the latest controversy could lead to serious consequences for those involved. While the former England batter said he sympathizes with the players, he feels the ECB may have little choice but to take strong action given the team's recent disciplinary record.

"I have an enormous amount of sympathy for everybody concerned in all of this, but unfortunately they were on their last chance. Whatever happens and whatever comes out in terms of the story, punishments will be flying and heads will probably roll. And that's unfortunately where we are, right or wrong."

The ECB introduced a strict curfew after a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. In October 2025, white-ball captain Harry Brook was fined and reprimanded following an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, while Jacob Bethell received an official warning.

During the 2025-26 Ashes tour of Australia, several England players were seen drinking alcohol during a break in Noosa, Queensland. A fan video involving Ben Duckett also attracted attention and led to a separate review by ECB managing director Rob Key.
