Quinton de Kock, on Friday (November 10), equaled legendary Adam Gilchrist and Sarfaraz Ahmed’s record of most wicketkeeping dismissals in a World Cup match. He achieved the feat during the game between South Africa and Afghanistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Proteas wicketkeeper effected six dismissals in the game as he took six catches behind the stumps. Gilchrist, the former Australia wicketkeeper, was the first wicketkeeper in the history of the game to have six dismissals in a World Cup game. He achieved the milestone against Namibia in the 2003 World Cup.

After Australia scored 301, they bowled out Namibia for just 45 runs with Glenn McGrath picking up 7 for 15. Gilchrist also played a key role in the huge win as he took six catches behind the stumps. 12 years later, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed replicated that feat against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup. Sarfaraz took six catches as Pakistan successfully managed to defend a modest total of 223 runs.

Most wicketkeeping dismissals in an ODI for South Africa:
6 – Mark Boucher vs PAK, Cape Town, 2007
6 – Quinton de Kock vs NZ, Mount Maunganui, 2014
6 – Quinton de Kock vs AFG, Ahmedabad, 2023

Most wicketkeeping dismissals in a World Cup match:
6 – Adam Gilchrist (AUS) vs NAM, Potchefstroom, 2003
6 – Sarfaraz Ahmed (PAK) vs SA, Auckland, 2015
6 – Quinton de Kock (SA) vs AFG, Ahmedabad, 2023

Quinton de Kock eyes another record:

Quinton de Kock will be looking to achieve another record as a wicketkeeper in his last-ever ODI World Cup. The South Africa star, who has already announced that he would retire from ODIs after the ongoing competition, can become the wicketkeeper with the most dismissals in a single edition of a World Cup.

The record is jointly held by Gilchrist and Tom Latham for having 21 dismissals to their names in the 2003 and 2019 World Cups respectively. Quinton de Kock, on the other hand, has 19 dismissals in the ongoing tournament. With South Africa to play at least one more game, he would be looking to break Gilchrist and Latham’s record.

Most wicketkeeping dismissals in a single World Cup edition

21 – Adam Gilchrist (Australia, 2003)
21 – Tom Latham (New Zealand, 2019)
20 – Alex Carey (Australia, 2019)
19 – Quinton de Kock (South Africa, 2023)
17 – Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, 2003)
17 – Adam Gilchrist (Australia, 2007)

De Kock is also having a very prolific campaign with the bat. In 8 games so far, he has scored 550 runs with the help of 4 centuries. He is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the competition, behind Rachin Ravindra who has scored 565 runs in 9 games.
