Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq hails the idea of Rahul Dravid taking the coach’s role for India’s tour of Sri Lanka as ‘amazing’ and ‘interesting’.
In recent news, Rahul Dravid is expected to fill in for Ravi Shastri for the tour to Sri Lanka, as Shastri, along with bowling coach Bharat Arun and batting coach Vikram Rathour, would be in England during that time with the first squad for the Test assignments.
India is scheduled to tour the neighbouring island for three ODIs and as many T20Is from July 13 to 27 with a second-string squad as the first strength squad will fly to the UK on June 2nd for the WTC final against New Zealand followed by a 5-Test series versus the hosts.
Dravid, however, will be already familiar with the young players having worked with them at India A and the Under-19 level. Inzamam-ul-Haq reckons the former India captain is the right man for the job as he has done wonders at junior level for Indian cricket.
“I had mentioned Rahul Dravid earlier as well… how he started producing players from the Under-19 group, who have gone on to play for the Indian team on a regular basis.
“And even now I’m hearing that the team which is going to Sri Lanka, Rahul Dravid could be its coach, he could look after it. I think that’s an amazing, interesting idea,” Inzamam-ul-Haq said on his YouTube channel.
If India are able to successfully pull it off, it will set a benchmark for the rest of the teams: Inzamam-ul-Haq
The 51-year-old marvels over the fact that India‘s second-string squad is also quite strong and could win in Sri Lanka.
Inzamam-ul-Haq opines that India fielding two separate teams simultaneously would be the benchmark for the rest of the cricket boards and their teams; he credits BCCI’s domestic structure for growing such an abundance of resources in Indian cricket.
“India are bringing a change in world cricket and I believe whichever nation strengthens its base, improves its First-Class structure, that country would be able to do what India are doing now – fielding two different international teams almost at the same time. If India are able to successfully pull it off, it will set a benchmark for the rest of the teams,” the former batsman commented.
