The BCCI is reportedly yet to begin discussions about the future of Team India’s support staff led by head coach Rahul Dravid. In 2021, the former India captain replaced Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the team and was given a two-year contract by the BCCI.
The tenure will end after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The final is scheduled to take place on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India have already booked their place in the final by thrashing New Zealand by 70 runs in the first semifinal on Wednesday (November 15). The Men in Blue will face either South Africa or Australia in the title decider.
The fate of Rahul Dravid and other support staff will be decided as soon as the World Cup ends. According to a report in Cricbuzz, there were different perspectives within the BCCI on the way forward for the coaching team. Not very long ago, there were reservations over the legendary cricketer’s coaching style as India failed to win the T20 World Cup last year as well as the World Test Championship final earlier this year.
The performance in bilateral series were not very impressive either as India suffered losses against the likes of Bangladesh and West Indies. However, things have changed in the past two months. With a number of key players returning from injuries, India won the Asia Cup and is now just one win away from clinching the World Cup.
BCCI yet to take a call on Rahul Dravid:
The report stated that India’s impressive performance in recent times have changed the BCCI officials’ views about Rahul Dravid’s coaching methods. A contract renewal or extension is very much likely after the stunning display in the World Cup. The final decision, however, will depend on whether Rahul Dravid himself is interested in continuing.
As of now, there is no clarity on his stance over a potential extension. The news outlet stated that there has been no discussion with the head coach about his future over the last month or before that. Rahul Dravid has decided to focus only on the World Cup. Even if Dravid decides against renewing the contract, the support staff is likely to get an extension.
“Whether or not Dravid chooses to continue, it is anticipated that members of his support staff – batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip-are likely to be offered extensions. Details are expected to emerge soon,” the report stated.
