Former Indian captain and the current head of the National Cricket Academy, Rahul Dravid will be the head coach of the national team that will travel to Sri Lanka for the white-ball series in July.
With the main Indian team led by Virat Kohli and coached by Ravi Shastri currently in England, a second-string team led by Shikhar Dhawan will tour Sri Lanka to play three ODIs and as many T20Is between July 13-27.
Dravid, who is the current head of NCA, has previously coached the Indian U-19 and A teams. He was also Team India’s batting consultant during the 2014 England tour.
The development was confirmed by Dravid’s former teammate and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.
“Rahul Dravid will be the coach for the India tour to Sri Lanka,” Sourav Ganguly told the Indian Express.
Ganguly also spoke about the issue of tax exemptions for the ICC T20 World Cup.
“We have written to Indian government on tax exemption. We are awaiting for their response. We still have time. The board will take decision on it soon,” Ganguly said.
Meanwhile, the Indian selectors have given a lot of young players an opportunity for the upcoming Sri Lankan white-ball series.
The likes of Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chetan Sakariya have earned their maiden call-up while Prithvi Shaw also returns into the mix after a stellar show in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the IPL.
Varun Chakravarthy, Krishnappa Goutham have also received call-ups while Kuldeep Yadav has also been picked in the squad alongside Yuzvendra Chahal.
