Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has suggested a revamp of the coaching system, stating that the Babar Azam-led team needs a team director and a modernized approach that involves streamlining the coaching system at the domestic as well as international level.

The Babar-Azam recently returned home following a successful African sojourn where they beat South Africa in ODI and T20I series followed by triumph in T20s and Test matches.

Ramiz Raja was, however, unhappy with Pakistan’s Test series win over Zimbabwe as he felt that it was a mismatch of epic proportion.

If you start fearing defeats, you end up losing. I feel, and according to modern thinking, this team needs a team director. Until and unless you don’t streamline the coaching system in U-19 team, the A team, the academies, the first-class team and the Pakistan team, until then the major issues will not be resolved,” said Ramiz Raja in a video, shared on YouTube channel.

‘We shouldn’t have too many coaches on a permanent basis’- Ramiz Raja

The cricketer-turned commentator further suggested that Pakistan can have Misbah-ul-Haq as head coach in the Test format and someone else in the shortest format of the game.

”And I am talking about T20 cricket and take power-hitting for example. You can define roles such as T20 coaches and power-hitting experts much better. You can have Misbah (ul Haq) as the Test coach and have somebody else as the T20 coach,” he added.

Ramiz Raja further reckoned that Pakistan cricket should do away with appointment coaches on a permanent basis and it should instead, appoint them on a ‘horses for courses’ basis depending on the opposition and the country where the team is scheduled to play.

“I feel we shouldn’t have too many coaches on a permanent basis, they should be your horses for courses. If you have gone to South Africa, pick a local cricketer with knowledge of the local conditions and bring him to the team. This long-term basis backfires and we need to focus on short-term coaching stints and according to the tours.” added Ramiz Raja.
