Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels that captains are not judged by World Cup titles but rather how they play the game. The former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri also said that if a captain has not won World Cup, it does not mean that he is a bad player.

Ravi Shastri’s words arrive after Virat Kohli stepped down as Test skipper of India. Kohli had also resigned from T20I captaincy in November last year. Later, BCCI removed him as ODI skipper so as to have the same player as the limited-overs captain. Rohit Sharma is the new skipper for India in ODIs and T20Is.

Many Players Have Not Won The World Cup: Ravi Shastri

While speaking to ANI, Ravi Shastri gave examples of many legendary Indian cricketers who did not win the World Cup. He reckoned that captains are not judged on the basis of World Cup titles and rather on their performances.

“Many players have not won the World Cup, Sourav Ganguly has not won it, Rahul Dravid has not won it, Anil Kumble has not won it, Laxman has not won it. Even Rohit Sharma has not won it but it does not mean they are bad players. You go and play, there are just World Cup-winning captains — MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev.

Sachin Tendulkar took six World Cups to lift his first title. It is not a question that you are judged by the World Cup, at the end of the day, you are judged on how you play, whether you play the game with integrity. That is how you judge the players at the end of the day,” Ravi Shastri said.

Ravi Shastri, who resigned as India’s head coach in November 2021, said that we have to respect Virat Kohli’s choice of leaving captaincy.

“There is a time for everything, you have to respect Virat’s choice. Many players in the past have left the captaincy to focus on their batting or cricket, be it Sunil Gavaskar or anyone. I have not seen anything, I  do not think there will be much change in Kohli,” Ravi Shastri further said.

Virat Kohli resigned as Test skipper after India lost to South Africa in the away Test series 2-1. Kohli led India for almost 7 years. He failed to win any ICC title under his leadership but grabbed many incredible victories in the bilateral series.

After Virat Kohli’s outer as Test skipper, BCCI is looking for a new Test captain who can lead the side in the longer format. Rohit Sharma is expected to take over as Test captain as well. BCCI will announce the new Test skipper ahead of India’s home Test series against Sri Lanka in February.
