Ravi Shastri Feels Dinesh Karthik Has Good Chance To Make It To T20 WC Squad If He Plays MS Dhoni's Role In The Team

Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri has talked about the chances of veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik making it to the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will be played in Australia.

Veteran wicket-keeper Karthik was in the spectacular form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as he scored 330 runs at an average of 55.00 and a strike rate of 183.33.

During an interaction on the Star Sports show Game Plan, Ravi Shastri was asked if he would look at Dinesh Karthik for India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World 2022.

Shastri replied by saying that India need a wicketkeeper-batsman who is capable of finishing the games for his team as MS Dhoni did in past for the Indian team.

He added that there are not many wicketkeeper-batters who can finish the games and Karthik is very few of them. Shastri feels that Karthik can be part of the Indian team if he plays a Dhoni-type role in the Indian team. He elaborated:

“You have to see from the team’s point of view, what are they looking for? Do they want a keeper who will bat at the top of the order or do they want a keeper who will be the finisher? I will go for the latter. You need a keeper who will do MS Dhoni’s role, let’s put it that way.

“There is already Rishabh Pant who can bat in the top four or five in T20 cricket but you want someone who can keep and finish a game because they aren’t too many finishers now with MS (Dhoni) having quit. So I think that’s where his chances are very very good.”

Karthik also got his India recall for the home T20I series against South Africa after his exceptional run in the cash-rich league.

Meanwhile, Shastri feels that the upcoming South Africa T20I series is Karthik’s opportunity to shine in India colours. Former India head coach also said that the series will be crucial for the 37-year-old wicket-keeper.

He said: “This is his opportunity. If and when he gets an opportunity in these games, he has to do it with India colors on. We know he has got the experience, so this becomes extremely vital.”

The five-match T20I series between India and South Africa will commence on June 9 in Delhi and the remaining games will be held in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru respectively.
