Former India head coach Ravi Shastri talked about the biggest challenge that the Indian team will face in the near future. According to Shastri, the pace bowling department will be a challenge as the current pacers will not get any younger and the team will need to groom new pacers for the future.

Currently, India have a marvellous pace attack with the likes of bowlers like Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvnshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, and Mohammed Siraj. With them, India have managed to dominate opposition on foreign as well as Indian soil. Their powerful attack was widely observed in the away Test series against Australia and England this year.

You Need To Start Grooming Some Players As Pacer: Ravi Shastri

While speaking to Star Sports, Ravi Shastri said that there will be a challenge two years down the line for the pace department as the current pacers will not get any younger. According to Shastri, the management will have to groom pacers for the future.

“I think to get the right blend of experience and youth, two years down the line, you need to start grooming some players. Think of two years ahead and yet have some experience.

“So, you might see some new talent; that will come through. The area which you need to look at is the pace bowling (because) they are not going any younger. If we expect them to bowl what they’re bowling now, it might not be the case,” Shastri said.

Ravi Shastri also believes that it will be tougher to excel on foreign soil after two years if the team does not have a good pace attack.

“There in will be the biggest challenge. To identify 5 good bowlers to play in ’23. It’s easier because it’s in India because there will be spin. It’s tougher when you go overseas.

“I think there will not be a problem for a year or year and a half, but after that, you will have to really start looking and grooming once you start traveling overseas again,” added Shastri.

Ravi Shastri retired as India’s head coach in November 2021, after the conclusion of ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Under Ravi Shastri as a coach, the Indian team bagged many achievements with skipper Virat Kohli, who retired as T20I skipper after T20 World Cup 2021. Recently, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI skipper as well, promoting Rohit Sharma as the skipper in both T20Is and ODIs. Virat Kohli is still India’s Test skipper.
