Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin broke another record in the first Test of the five-match series against England. Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed legendary spinner Anil Kumble to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker against England in Test cricket.

The Rohit Sharma-led team is dominating against England in the ongoing match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. The home team bowled out the Ben Stokes-led side for just 246 in their first innings on the opening day of the Test match.

Ravichandran Ashwin Breaks Anil Kumble’s Record

Ravichandran Ashwin started the Test match with 88 wickets in 19 matches. The 37-year-old spinner was in third place in the list of India’s leading wicket-takers against England in Tests. Ashwin took five wickets across the two innings to surpass Anil Kumble’s wicket tally.

Bhagwat Chandrasekhar currently leads the chart with 95 wickets in 23 Tests at an average of 27.27, with the best figures of 8/79. Ashwin has taken 93 wickets at an average of 28.46. Anil Kumble is in third place with 92 wickets to his name in 19 matches in red-ball cricket.

Overall, veteran fast bowler James Anderson tops the bowling charts in Tests between the two teams. The 41-year-old has picked up 139 wickets at an average of 24.89, including six five-wicket hauls. Ashwin has the opportunity to reach 100 wickets in the ongoing series.

Earlier on the third day, India was bowled out for 436 runs in their first innings, taking a substantial 190-run lead. The hosts added just 15 runs to their overnight score. Ashwin scored one run before being involved in a runout mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja on Day 2.

Ravichandran Ashwin provided the first breakthrough for India, dismissing opener Zak Crawley in England’s second innings. Crawley, who scored 31 runs off 33 deliveries, edged the ball to Rohit Sharma at first slip. Crawley hit one six, and four boundaries in his knock.

Ashwin delivered an unplayable delivery to dismiss England skipper Ben Stokes for six runs. He bowled a typical off-spinner’s delivery, pitching on the leg stump and hitting the off stump. The visitors lost five wickets for 163 runs on the board in their second innings.

Hope Ashwin Completes 500 Test Wickets In This Match – Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja expressed his desire for Ravichandran Ashwin to reach 500 Test wickets in the ongoing match. Jadeja wished Ashwin continued success in taking wickets for India.

“It will be a big achievement if Ashwin completes 500 Test wickets and I hope he gets it in this match. I am left with 25 wickets for 300 and it might take the whole series, but I wish Ashwin completes his 500 in this game itself and continues taking wickets for India,” Jadeja told JioCinema as per news agency PTI.

Ashwin and Jadeja surpassed the combined tally of 501 wickets held by Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, becoming the most successful Test bowling pair for India. The accomplished spin duo achieved this milestone in just 54 matches.
