Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin missed out on setting a world record for the most 'Man of the Series' awards due to an error. According to The Indian Express, the Man of the Series performances against Bangladesh would have allowed him to surpass Muttiah Muralitharan's record.
Ravichandran Ashwin was named Man of the Series after India’s 2-0 Test series victory over Bangladesh in Kanpur.
The Rohit Sharma-led team secured the victory in the match despite two days being called off due to rain. Ashwin picked up five wickets across two innings of the second and final Test match.
Ravichandran Ashwin Denied World Record For Most Player-of-the-Series Awards
Ashwin was named Man of the Series for the 11th time in his career. He equaled the record of Muttiah Muralitharan in Test history.
However, the 38-year-old bowler would have surpassed Muralitharan's record if he had received a similar award during India's tour of the West Indies last year.
According to The Indian Express, an official oversight during the West Indies tour prevented Ashwin from breaking the record with his performances against Bangladesh.
Ashwin was the leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets and scored 56 runs as India secured the series victory 1-0 in the West Indies.
The report added that the Man of the Series award was not presented to Ashwin during the presentation ceremony following the second Test in Port of Spain. The Indian Express reported that Cricket West Indies (CWI) said that an Indian agency managed the sponsorship during that Test series.
However, that agency clarified that it only handled commercial aspects and that the award fell under CWI's cricket operations.
There was a blame shift between CWI and the Indian agency regarding the award, but it should have been given to Ashwin, even if it wasn't during the post-match ceremony.
Winning This Game Was Important For Us - Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin ended the series against Bangladesh with 11 wickets, the joint-most with Jasprit Bumrah.
He secured the Man of the Series award due to his outstanding century in the Chennai Test. The 38-year-old is set to be next seen in action in a three-match Test series against New Zealand.
Speaking to host broadcasters during the post-match presentation ceremony, Ashwin expressed his satisfaction with playing a key role in India's seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test.
"Really glad I'm able to turn up performances for the team's victory. Winning this game was important for us. Lot of bowlers contributed really well for us today," Ashwin said.
"Massive win for us in the context of the WTC. When we bowled them out yesterday, it was a little after lunch. Rohit was keen that we needed 80 overs to bowl at them."
