Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Bangar opened up about Chennai Super Kings (CSK) off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's future after underwhelming performances in IPL 2025. Bangar stated that the Super Kings may consider releasing Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of the next IPL season to free up their purse.

The Super Kings became the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025 after their four-wicket loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS) at home on Wednesday, April 30. It was the first time the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. Bangar predicted CSK might make changes to their squad.

Sanjay Bangar Weighs In on Ravichandran Ashwin’s Retention by CSK for Next Season

Sanjay Bangar said that CSK management might release Ravichandran Ashwin to free up some funds before the next mini-auction. Bangar stated that CSK might evaluate other players, like Matheesa Pathirana, and decide whether to keep them or look for replacements.

“Whether they retain Ashwin or not is going to be another big question because that's where the money is locked in. If they want to free up their purse a little bit, in the knowledge that they might not want to use Ashwin as much as they have used in this particular season,” said Bangar on Star Sports.

"So, probably out of those big-ticket players, those are the two players (Ashwin and Pathirana) that they might just think of whether they want to keep them or maybe find a replacement for them," he added.

Ravichandran Ashwin Purchased by Chennai Super Kings for ₹9.75 Crore at Mega Auction

Ravichandran Ashwin was bought by Chennai Super Kings for a whopping ₹9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, the veteran spinner has struggled to live up to expectations. Ashwin has taken only five wickets in seven matches, with an average of 44.60 and an economy rate of 9.29.

His best performance came in the opening game against the Mumbai Indians (MI), where he picked up 1/31 in four overs. He also took two wickets in a match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) but conceded 48 runs in his four overs.

Ashwin was recently dropped from the playing XI in the tournament. Notably, the MS Dhoni-led team has spin bowlers like Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmad.

CSK to Face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3

Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 185 wickets in 215 innings in his IPL career - the fifth-highest number of wickets in tournament history.

Chennai Super Kings are struggling at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table. With only two wins from 10 games, their net run rate stands at -1.211. They will next take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3.

CSK can no longer reach 14 or 16 points, having only two wins to their name. The five-time champions lost their most recent three games. Since 2020, CSK has participated in six IPL seasons, qualifying for the playoffs only twice, and missing out on four occasions.
