Joe Root Anchors England’s Innings on a Challenging Lord’s Surface

Joe Root played a vital role in anchoring the innings on a challenging surface. England began with a 43-run opening stand between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. However, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/46 in 14 overs, removed both batters in the same over.

Root then steadied the innings alongside Ollie Pope, adding 109 runs for the third wicket. Pope was dismissed for 44 by Ravindra Jadeja on the first ball after tea. Stokes joined Root in the 50th over and scored 39 runs off 102 balls, despite appearing to struggle with a physical issue.

The day ended with Root one run short of his century as Stokes blocked the final deliveries to ensure no further damage.
