There has been a massive debate about the ODI future of senior players Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, as they are all set to begin preparations for the ICC World Cup 2027. Mohammed Shami has been out of the Indian side for a long time now.
While Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20I cricket, Mohammed Shami has been overlooked by the selectors time and again, with many reports suggesting the selectors are not happy with his outspokenness to the media. Some also suggested the selectors are not convinced of his form and fitness.
Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami dream to play ICC World Cup
However, both experienced stars still want to play in the ICC World Cup 2027, but their place in the ODI team is no longer certain. The Indian cricket team management has started focusing more on young players as they prepare for the next World Cup.
The selectors have recently tried other spin options like Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav to test new team combinations. Because of this, Ravindra Jadeja's spot in the ODI team is under pressure. India’s ODI tour of England in July 2026 could become a very important series for the spin all-rounder.
Things are also not well for Shami. Even after doing well in domestic cricket, the senior Indian pacer was not picked for the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year. Instead, the selectors have started giving chances to young fast bowlers like Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna.
Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami not part of India's World Cup 2027 plans
And then, the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has already started planning for the ICC World Cup 2027. After the upcoming IPL 2026, the Men in Blue are expected to play around 25 to 30 ODI matches to test different players and find the best team combination.
Senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are all but confirmed to play in that mega event. Both players are now playing only the 50-over format, having retired from Test and T20I cricket. But a PTI journalist claimed that Shami and Jadeja are not part of the ICC World Cup 2027 plans.

He hinted that Rohit, Shubman Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah have almost finalized the ODI event, but there is no place for Ravindra Jadeja and Shami.

Hectic schedule ahead for India
Well, India will have a very busy schedule in the coming months. After the IPL 2026, the Men in Blue will host Afghanistan for a Test and three ODIs. Then the team will travel to England for a white-ball series and may also play matches against the Ireland national cricket team.
They could play either three T20Is or three ODIs at the start of the tour in July or at the end. All these matches are part of India’s preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The team wants to test many players before finalizing the squad for the big tournament.
