India captain Shubman Gill and senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are expected to return to domestic cricket after the 1-2 ODI series loss to New Zealand. According to Cricbuzz, unless plans change at the last moment, both players are likely to feature in the match and compete against each other in the fixture.
Team India will focus on a five-match T20I series against New Zealand and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. Gill and Jadeja do not have an immediate international commitment. Jadeja has already retired from T20Is, while Gill has not been selected. Both players are available for the next round of the Ranji Trophy.
Shubman Gill And Ravindra Jadeja Likely To Return To Domestic Cricket After ODI Series Loss
According to Cricbuzz, Ravindra Jadeja is expected to play for Saurashtra in their next Ranji Trophy match against Punjab in Rajkot. The match is scheduled to begin on January 22. There are also strong signs that Shubman Gill will feature in the same game.
"Cricbuzz learnt about Jadeja's participation moments after the ODI series against New Zealand concluded in Indore, which India lost 2-1. It has also been learnt that Gill too will travel to Rajkot, pending a last-minute decision," the report stated.
Meanwhile, Gill is also likely to travel to Rajkot, though a final decision is still pending. Both players are expected to receive formal confirmation by Monday. If they are named for the Group B match, they will travel from Indore to Rajkot. They had earlier gone from Rajkot to Indore after the second ODI.
Shubman Gill Yet To Feature This Season, Ravindra Jadeja Has Played Once
Saurashtra and Punjab are placed in the lower half of their Elite Group. Saurashtra have one win and four draws from five matches, placing them fourth behind Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Punjab are sixth with one win and one loss from five games.
Punjab currently have 11 points with a net run rate of +0.708. Saurashtra also have one win from five matches but sit higher on the table due to their overall results.
Shubman Gill has not played a Ranji Trophy match this season. His last appearance in the tournament came last season against Karnataka. Ravindra Jadeja has featured once this season for Saurashtra, playing against Madhya Pradesh.
Both teams will have one more league match after this fixture. With no immediate international duties, it remains unclear whether Gill and Jadeja will be available for the final game.
Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja End ODI Series With Modest Returns
India lost the three-match ODI series to New Zealand by 2-1, and both Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja had quiet outings. Gill scored a total of 135 runs in three innings, including 23 off 18 balls in the third ODI. India failed to chase down a target of 338 in the series decider.
Jadeja endured a tough series, failing to take a single wicket and scoring only 43 runs across three innings at an average of 14.33. In the final ODI, he was dismissed for 12 off 16 balls.
Jadeja has already retired from T20Is, and this ODI series may also have been his last in the format. With Axar Patel waiting in the wings and several all-rounders impressing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, pressure is growing on the selectors to move on from the 37-year-old veteran.
