A major update has emerged on India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who was hospitalized after suffering a life-threatening ribcage injury during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney on Saturday (October 25).
While running backwards to take a tough catch of Alex Carey, Shreyas Iyer landed awkwardly and hurt his lower left rib cage. The vice-captain appeared visibly uncomfortable and walked off the field, but his condition deteriorated in the dressing room as his vital signs dropped to alarming levels.

Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala credits the medical team for saving Shreyas Iyer’s life
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer continues to recover in Sydney under the close supervision of the team doctor. While the rest of the Indian squad and support staff have already traveled to Canberra for the first T20I against Australia, the team doctor has stayed behind to monitor Iyer’s condition round the clock in Sydney. His family is also expected to arrive in Australia soon to be with him during his recovery.
On the other hand, Iyer’s medical documents were sent to Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the head of the ICC Medical Committee and the BCCI’s top medical expert at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Center for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Pardiwala informed the BCCI that the medical team’s quick and precise action on the field played a crucial role in saving Iyer’s life. Dainik Jagran quoted an email from Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala to the BCCI as saying, “Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life.”
Injury setback puts Shreyas Iyer’s return and T20 World Cup 2026 hopes in jeopardy
This life-threatening ribcage injury has thrown Iyer’s return to the field into serious doubt. The Indian vice-captain was all set to lead the India A side in the home one-day series against South Africa A, but his current condition has unofficially ruled him out of the games.
Now, Tilak Varma is expected to take charge of India A for the upcoming matches against South Africa A. Iyer had only recently made a strong return to form and even led India A in the home games against Australia A. However, this unexpected injury has once again halted his progress.
His availability for the upcoming home series against South Africa and New Zealand now looks highly uncertain. Although he is currently not part of India’s T20I setup, Iyer was believed to be close to earning a recall, but now his chances of making it to the T20 World Cup 2026 have taken a serious hit.
