Opting to bat, Sri Lanka was off to the dream start with the bat as openers Pathum Nissanka (45) and Avishka Fernando (96) put India under pressure with their 89-run opening stand. After Nissanka got out, Kusal Mendis (59) supported Fernando. They added 82 runs for the second wicket.

Apart from Dunith, Maheesh Theekshana, and Jeffrey Vandersay bagged two wickets as the island nation registered a first-ever ODI series win over India since 1997.
