India National Cricket Team started the tour to Australia on a dominating note. Under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, the visitors produced a dominating effort with the bat and ball and registered a mammoth 295-run victory at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Coming into the Perth Test on the back of the 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand at home, no one gave India a chance to win. But they silenced all their critics in style, especially with the team full of youngsters and Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj being the only experienced bowlers.

India failed to get going with bat in the first innings

India opted to bat first, and it wasn't the kind of outing that they would've wanted. The visitors got all out for 150 runs and came under massive pressure. Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) and Rishabh Pant (37) were the top run-getters for the team but the effort wasn't enough as they were under massive pressure.

However, India turned things around remarkably well with the ball. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with the ball as he picked a five-wicket haul and had the Australia National Cricket Team on their feet. Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj supported him well as they bundled out hosts for just 104 runs, taking a leading of 46 runs.

With the bat then, India made sure they made up for the poor effort of the first innings in the second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and KL Rahul (77) took the team off to a dream start as they added 201 runs for the opening partnership, which was the highest for the team in the Australian conditions.

India win first Test against Australia by 295 runs

After that, Virat Kohli also returned to form and slammed his 30th Test hundred. Nitish Kumar Reddy (38*) down the order played a brutal hand as the India National Cricket Team declared the second innings on 487 runs, setting the Australia National Cricket Team a mammoth target of 534 runs to chase.

It was Jasprit Bumrah's masterclass with the ball yet again. He picked two wickets in the last session of Day 3 and then oozed his class with the ball on Day 4. Mohammed Siraj also supported him well as he bagged three wickets as India National Cricket Team ended Australia's innings for 238 to win the game by 295 runs.

India National Cricket Team are at the top of the put of the ICC World Test Championship

The win in the opening game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 put the India National Cricket Team at the top of the put of the ICC World Test Championship. They are the top with a PCT of 61.11 with 9 wins in 15 matches so far in the cycle. Australia, meanwhile, slipped to the second spot, with a PCT of 57.69, after eight wins in 13 matches.

But the win in Perth doesn't guarantee them a WTC final spot and to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, they still have an uphill task ahead. The Rohit Sharma-led side cannot afford to lose a single game in the series and to make it into the summit clash, they need to win three more games in Australia along with one draw.
