The Pakistan national cricket team is still in the race to qualify for the Super 8 stage during the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The Pakistan team heaved a sigh of relief after the India national cricket team's victory over the United States of America (USA) in the 25th match of the prestigious T20 tournament.
The Babar Azam-led team began their T20 World Cup 2024 with losses to the United States of America and India. However, the Men in Green secured their first victory by defeating Canada by seven wickets in New York. Both the USA and Pakistan are now aiming to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the ongoing tournament.
How Pakistan Will Qualify For Super 8s Of T20 World Cup 2024
The Rohit Sharma-led team became the first team to qualify from Group A for the Super 8 stages. The Men in Blue secured a seven-wicket win against the United States of America in New York on Wednesday, June 12. The India team successfully chased down a 111-run target with 10 balls to spare in their recent game.
Pakistan is in third place with two points after three matches. The Babar Azam-led team is behind the USA, who have four points, and ahead of Canada, also with two points. Pakistan has a better net run rate with +0.191 compared to +0.127 for the co-hosts. Ireland is at the bottom of the Group A table with zero points.
Pakistan can secure qualification for the Super 8 stage if they defeat Ireland in their final group match. The 2009 World Cup champions will hope for Ireland's victory against the USA. The Pakistani team will reach the next stage of the tournament regardless of the margin of victory if Ireland defeats the United States of America.
Meanwhile, the USA must secure at least one point against Ireland to qualify for the Super 8 stage. A win against Ireland or a match washout would help the USA reach the Super 8 stage. A washout between Pakistan and Ireland could benefit the USA by allowing them to advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Pakistan to face Ireland amid rain chaos
Pakistan will face Ireland in their final match in Florida on Sunday, June 16. There is a chance for rain and thunderstorms, with cloudy conditions expected, as per AccuWeather. Meanwhile, cloudy skies are predicted along with showers and heavy thunderstorms during the USA's match against Ireland in Florida.
Speaking after the crucial win vs Canada, Babar said, "Good for us. We needed this win. Credit to the team. We started well and took wickets with the new ball. We had NRR on the back of our minds. The first six overs are very crucial here. You assess after 6 overs. Then we tried to take on the spinners. We are going to go with the same mindset. The conditions in Florida should be better from here as well. I got out to the same shot. So, I was angry. I still try my level best," Babar Azam said.
