Revealed- What Will Happen If India vs New Zealand Semi Final Match Gets Washed Away Due To Rain?
India, South Africa, and Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and it’s only a matter of time before New Zealand officially enters as the fourth semi-finalist. By winning all of their eight matches, India has established a top-place finish in the league stage which was played in the round-robin format irrespective of the result of their match against the Netherlands on Sunday.
New Zealand on the other hand can’t finish above fourth position, which means that India will again face New Zealand in the semi-finals of the World Cup. The two teams also locked horns in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals where the Blackcaps emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against the Men In Blue.
Pakistan is still alive to challenge New Zealand for that fourth and last semi-final spot, but it is only mathematical as they face an almost impossible task in their last league match against England. They will have to win by an improbably huge margin to have a better net run rate than New Zealand’s. Pakistan will have to beat England by a margin of 287 runs or if they chase they have to reach the target in 2.4 overs in order to qualify for the semi-finals.
What Will Happen If The World Cup Semi-Finals Are Washed In Rain
South Africa is currently sitting at No. 2 with 14 points to their name from seven wins in the league stage and Australia is No. 3 with 12 points. However, if the Aussies beat Bangladesh by a considerable margin in their last league match. They can make their net run rate better than South Africa’s, to finish second place and South Africa will drop to third, which can actually have an impact in case the semi-final between the two teams in Kolkata is washed out due to rain.
The semi-finals will be guarded with an extra layer of security with a reserve day just in case, rain decides to play spoilsport. However, there is a possibility that the reserve day can also be washed in rain as we have seen it happening during the IPL finals where the final ended after almost three days.
The rule in this case states that the team that finishes higher on the points table in the round-robin league stage will advance to the finals. Abiding by that rule, India will reach the finals just in case of a washout in their semifinal. Similarly, whoever finishes No. 2 between South Africa and Australia on the points table will progress to the final in case their semi-final is also washed out.
