In a recent development, the BCCI announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with Suryakumar Yadav named skipper. Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were left out of the team, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the reasons behind their omission from the squad.
India’s Asia Cup squad has several match-winners. However, the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer surprised many fans. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma have delivered strong performances recently, making it difficult for the BCCI to adjust the lineup to include them.
Ajit Agarkar Opens Up on Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal Exclusion
After announcing India’s Asia Cup squad alongside Suryakumar Yadav in Mumbai, Ajit Agarkar revealed the reason behind Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer’s exclusions.
Agarkar said that Abhishek Sharma can provide flexibility for the captain, which made it tough to accommodate Jaiswal. Speaking on Iyer, Agarkar said that it’s not due to any fault of the player or selectors, and he may have to wait for his opportunity.
"With regards to Yashasvi Jaiswal, I mean it's just unfortunate again. Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last few months or a year or so that he's been with the team. Plus, that he can bowl a little bit gives us an option, if required, by the captain," Agarkar said.
"One of these guys was always going to miss out. It's just unfortunate that Yashasvi might have to wait for his chance. With regards to Shreyas, I mean, we can replace that. Again, no fault of his. Nor is it ours. It's just that he can pick 15 and, at the moment, he might have to wait for his chance."
Yashasvi Jaiswal Part of India’s T20 World Cup-Winning Squad Last Year
Yashasvi Jaiswal was part of the victorious T20 World Cup squad last year but didn’t feature in a single match. Since then, India have played 20 T20Is under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, winning 17 of them with an impressive 85% success rate.
Jaiswal had been in good rhythm in the shorter format in international cricket and the IPL. The left-handed batter scored 559 runs in 14 games at an average of 43 and a strike rate of 159.71 during the IPL 2025 season.
Overall, he has scored 723 runs from 22 T20Is at an average of 36.15, including a century. The southpaw last played a T20I series against Sri Lanka in 2024, where he managed 80 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 177.
Shreyas Iyer Left Out of India’s Asia Cup Squad Despite Stellar IPL 2025 Performance
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer also missed out on India’s Asia Cup squad despite an outstanding IPL 2025 season. He scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the finals. However, the Kings lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the summit clash.
Iyer’s exclusion from the Test side was expected, but his absence from T20Is since December 2023 has surprised many. With Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 batting positions, Iyer’s return to the T20I side may depend on injury or fitness issues.
The Asia Cup 2025 will start on September 9 in the UAE. India are in Group A with UAE, Oman, and Pakistan, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong.
