The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named Richard Thompson as its new chair on Saturday.
Since Ian Watmore resigned in October 2021, the job has been vacant. Thompson, 55, will replace it starting on September 1 and will leave his current position as chair of Surrey County Cricket Club.
Following a thorough vetting process led by Independent Director Brenda Trenowden, Thompson was appointed. Thompson was unanimously recommended to the ECB Board by the Nominations Committee, and he is now slated to succeed Martin Darlow, who has served as Interim Chair since April.
“It gives me great pride to lead the ECB at this crucial juncture for cricket. I have had the opportunity to meet a truly remarkable variety of people thanks to cricket. To advance our game and reach new heights across England and Wales, I want to harness their passion, effort, and love for the game,” Thompson added.
“Cricket ought to be the most diverse sport in the nation, attracting players from all backgrounds and uniting neighborhoods. I will do all of my effort to win back the trust of the areas where we have failed,” added Thompson.
Richard Thompson has been Chair at Surrey since 2010:
Since taking over as Surrey’s chair in 2010, Thompson has played a key role in the club’s accomplishments both on and off the field.
“We would all like to congratulate Richard on his new position at Surrey County Cricket Club. The sport is in the best possible hands. His love for cricket has been evident to all during his stay at our club, “Steve Elworthy, CEO of Surrey, remarked.
“Richard has a compelling vision for cricket’s future, one that will win over players from all facets of the game and beyond. Richard has served as our club’s Chair during a time of tremendous change at Surrey, and he has made an outstanding contribution, “the CEO of Surry said.
Richard Thompson has been named the chair of the ECB for the next five years.
