Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has found himself in the middle of a social media storm due to a false quote. The quote started doing the rounds after the conclusion of the match between India and Pakistan on Sunday (September 14) in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
The match was marred by a 'no handshake' incident as the Indian team decided against indulging in the customary tradition owing to the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. Captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with his Pakistan counterpart Salman Ali Agha at the toss, and the entire Indian team did the same after the match ended.

Fake Ponting quotes spread by Pakistan miscreants
Soon after the game, a quote falsely attributed to Ricky Ponting started circulating on X, misleading many. The Australian legend was attributed with making a comment about the handshake row during the India vs Pakistan clash in Dubai.
"This match will be remembered forever with India as the big loser. The way the Pakistani team wanted to shake hands at the end has immortalised them as champions of the gentleman’s game with India as the perpetual loser," the fake quote stated. The user spreading the quote also stated that Ricky Ponting had made the comment on Sky Sports.
Ricky Ponting responds
As soon as the quote went viral, thousands of messages criticising and slamming Ricky Ponting started doing the rounds on the social media platform.
With things getting out of hands, the former cricketer-turned-commentator has himself addressed the situation in a post on X.
"I am aware of certain comments being attributed to me on social media, Ricky Ponting wrote.
"Please know that I categorically did not make those statements and indeed have made no public comment about the Asia Cup at all," he added.
India-Pakistan at loggerheads
Meanwhile, India cricketers' decision to not shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts has spiraled into a major controversy.
It was the first match between the two teams since the military conflict between the two countries earlier this year following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Soon after hitting the winning six, India captain Suryakumar Yadav and batting partner Shivam Dube immediately left the field rather than shaking hands with the Pakistan players.
The Pakistan players appeared to walk towards the Indian dugout but the Indian players and the support staff once again ignored them and returned to the dressing room.
