Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, and Veda Krishnamurthy were among the big names to remain unsold in the WPL 2024 auction. A total of 30 players were sold in the auction with a total of 12,75,00,000 purse spent by all the franchises.

All five teams have now built a squad of 18 players each. Uncapped India pacer Kashvee Gautam and Australia all-rounder Annabel Sutherland were sold for 2 crores each at the auction. Gautam went to Gujarat Giants whereas Sutherland was picked by Delhi Capitals.

In another big bid, uncapped opener Vrinda Dinesh was sold to UP Warriorz for INR 1.3 crore, at 13 times her base price. Vrinda, who plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket, has scored 357 runs across 17 T20 matches at a strike rate of 126.10.

The various teams went with different mindsets into the auction. Teams were keen on getting specific kinds of players and hence did not mind spending money.

Athapattu is the skipper of the Sri Lanka women’s national cricket team and is one of the most reputed batters of her time. She was the Player of the tournament in the recently concluded Women’s BBL.

Plying her trade for the Sydney Thunder, Athapaththu scored 511 runs at an average of 42.58 and a strike rate of 129.69 and picked nine wickets at an economy of 6.79 in the tournament.

Athapattu has scored 5906 international runs for Sri Lanka in over 200 matches. She has also scored nine hundreds and 23 fifties in her career so far.

Given her international experience, none of the teams willing to bid for her was surprising, to say the least. Athapattu remained unsold in the inaugural WPL auction as well.
