Former India batter Mohammad Kaif spoke about the post-match confrontation involving Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and captain Suryakumar Yadav after the T20 World Cup 2026 game against Pakistan. Kaif said that the exchange showed comfort and honesty within the group, not any personal issues.

Following the match against Pakistan, some visible tension was seen among India players at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, February 15. During the 18th over of Pakistan’s chase, Kuldeep dropped a catch off Shaheen Afridi, which allowed a six off Hardik Pandya.

Hardik recovered on the final ball of the over by dismissing Usman Tariq, sealing India’s 61-run win while defending 175. After Pakistan were bowled out for 114 in 18 overs, Hardik and Kuldeep were seen in a heated exchange. During the post-match handshakes, Kuldeep ignored Suryakumar Yadav.

Mohammad Kaif Opens Up on Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya’s Angry Reactions to Kuldeep Yadav

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif said that Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav share a close bond and often tease each other during matches. Kaif added that Kuldeep tends to get frustrated with himself when things do not go his way.

“They are all friends. Kuldeep is that kind of character in this team where, if he is not bowling well, he gets upset with himself. The teammates also tease him at times, like saying you dropped a catch. There is no personal problem in any of this. In fact, it is a good thing," Kaif said.

"On the field, you usually show anger only towards someone you are close to and comfortable with. If you are not comfortable with someone, you do not even express yourself fully in front of them. But Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma are comfortable with Kuldeep."

"We have seen many times during matches that they discuss things openly. Rohit might say it pitched on the leg side and is not LBW, while Kuldeep insists and tries to convince him to take the DRS. This kind of back-and-forth happens often.”

On the Field, Suryakumar Yadav Might Shout - Mohammad Kaif

Kaif stated that Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya have exchanged sharp words with teammates during matches. He said the team environment allows players to speak openly without taking things personally, and that a bit of aggression or on-field banter is normal.

“The same thing happens with Surya as well. On the field, he might shout and say, catch it properly, what are you doing? It shows up on camera. Even Hardik Pandya has said things to him. But there is no issue between them. There is strong understanding within the Indian team," Kaif continued.

"It actually reflects how good the bonding is in the team, that you can speak openly to one another. Some players might take such comments negatively, but here it is all in a friendly spirit. They all play together with that camaraderie."

"Kuldeep is a big-match player for this team, and everyone knows what he is capable of on his day. Hardik knows it, Surya knows it. So I do not see any problem in a little bit of aggression or banter on the field. It is simply part of the game,” he added.

It Is Difficult to Leave Out Kuldeep Yadav - Mohammad Kaif

Kaif stated that India may tweak their combination for the final Group A match against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 18. He said Arshdeep Singh is likely to return to the playing XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Kaif added that Kuldeep was picked in Colombo due to the conditions.

“Now the focus is on the Super 8s and ultimately on how to win the World Cup final and lift the trophy. So you go back to the combinations that worked earlier in places like Mumbai and Delhi. Kuldeep played in Colombo because the pitch there was slow," Kaif opined.

"The boundaries were big and the ball was turning, so spin was effective. That is why Arshdeep was left out. Arshdeep is a highly capable bowler with a very strong record. But he was replaced by Kuldeep because that was the demand of the conditions and the pitch."

"The situation required an extra spinner. However, I think Arshdeep Singh will return now. It is difficult to leave out someone like Kuldeep because he is a quality bowler. But that is the special thing about this team."
