India’s stand-in captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been at his talkative best in the second and final Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati on Day 2. Rishabh Pant lost his cool at Kuldeep Yadav after India received repeated warnings for a slow over-rate.

Pant’s frustration exploded when the wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav took too long to begin his over. With the umpire already issuing a second warning, India was just one step away from being hit with a five-run penalty.

That would have handed South Africa free runs at a crucial stage, and Pant simply couldn’t tolerate the casual attitude creeping into the fielding unit. Unable to hold back, India’s stand-in captain shouted at Kuldeep to start the next delivery immediately.

His anger grew when he noticed a few teammates walking leisurely to their positions instead of reacting quickly. The stump mic even caught him venting his frustration, clearly showing how fed up he was with the unnecessary delay on Day 2 in Guwahati.

Rishabh Pant was heard as saying on the stump mic, “Yaar, 30 seconds ka timer hai. Ghar pe khel rahe ho kya? Ek ball daal jaldi. (The timer is on. Are you playing at your home? Just bowl the ball quickly.”

By the time the second warning was announced, Rishabh Pant was visibly furious. He reminded his team that another offense would cost them five vital runs and make India look careless in a high-pressure final Test match.

The Indian wicketkeeper-batter's body language made it clear that he expected sharper awareness and commitment from every player.

Pant further shouted, “Yaar Kuldeep, dono baar warning le li (Kuldeep, we got the second warning). Pura ek over thodi na chahiye. Mazak bana rakha hai Test cricket ko (Do you guys need an entire over (to move)? You guys have made Test cricket a joke).”

The reason behind this frustration is the new stop-clock rule introduced by the ICC earlier in 2025. Under this rule, the fielding team must begin the next over within 60 seconds of the previous one ending.

Two warnings are allowed, but a third delay instantly gifts the batting side five runs. This rule applies to all games under the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

Rishabh Pant’s stump mic magic leaves commentators in splits during the Guwahati Test

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant kept the commentators entertained in Guwahati with his stump mic game. They were left amused by the left-hander’s loud, playful on-field chatter on Day 2. They even hinted that the conversations among players during the break might be far more colorful.

His reactions, jokes, and non-stop talking behind the stumps make him one of the most entertaining wicketkeepers the game has ever seen, according to the former Indian head coach Anil Kumble. Former Indian cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara, Aakash Chopra, and Kumble shared their views on Pant’s stump mic chatter while commentating on Star Sports.

Cheteshwar Pujara: We'll have to listen to what will be discussed during the break. Because this conversation with the stump mic is a little different from the conversation in the dressing room. Where there is no mic, we'll have to take some feedback on what language is used and how it is discussed.

Aakash Chopra: The discussion in the dressing room might be colorful.

Anil Kumble: He is doing all the entertaining captaincy over there. He is the most entertaining behind the stumps among all the wicketkeepers the game has ever seen.
