Tension flared on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and England, as Rishabh Pant found himself at the center of major controversy after losing his cool on the umpire at Headingley. Rishabh Pant’s routine ball-change request turned into a fiery moment that has now put the Indian star at risk of facing action from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The incident happened during the 61st over of England’s innings on Day 3 of the ongoing five-match Test series opener at Headingley. Mohammed Siraj had just been hit for a ramp shot by Harry Brook, which flew over the slips for four runs.

Right after that shot, Rishabh Pant believed the ball had gone out of shape. He quickly walked up to on-field umpire Paul Reiffel and asked for the ball to be changed. Paul Reiffel checked the ball using the standard measuring tool called the ball gauge.

After inspecting it carefully, the on-field umpire ruled that the ball was still in good condition and there was no need to change the ball. Pant clearly didn’t agree with Reiffel. Frustrated, Pant tried to argue his point and continued to talk to the umpire, but Reiffel didn’t change his decision.
That’s when things turned heated, which shocked everyone. In full view of the cameras and crowd, angry Pant backhanded the ball into the turf and walked away in visible anger. The Indian vice-captain’s actions drew loud boos from the crowd at Headingley, and the video quickly went viral across social media.
Rishabh Pant faces possible ICC action
Now, Rishabh Pant’s reaction could get him into serious trouble. The ICC may consider this as a violation of their Code of Conduct. Showing dissent to the umpire and handling the ball aggressively are both actions that can lead to fines or even a match ban.
According to the ICC’s Code of Conduct, Pant’s actions could possibly break two specific rules, both of which deal with player behavior on the field. The first possible violation is under Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct. It can be treated as either a Level 1 or Level 2 offense.

Pant’s actions could potentially violate two separate articles under the ICC Code of Conduct:
Article 2.8: Refer to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”
Clause (a): For “showing obvious and excessive disappointment at an umpire’s decision.”
Clause (h): Refers to “engaging in prolonged discussions with the umpire about the decision.”
Article 2.9: The second possible breach is under Article 2.9, which refers to “throwing a ball at or near an umpire in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner.”
Well, Pant didn’t aim the ball at the umpire, but his backhanded throw of the ball into the ground, right after the decision, could be seen as disrespectful and aggressive. This article carries penalties under both Level 1 and Level 2, depending on how the act is viewed by match officials.
Both rules can lead to Level 1 or Level 2 punishments, which may include a fine, demerit points, or, in serious cases, a short suspension.
