Rishabh Pant’s childhood coach Tarak Sinha has narrated a heartwarming incident that occurred in his nascent years. Rishabh Pant has emerged as a runaway match-winner in recent times across formats, playing an instrumental role in the Indian team’s success. The 23-year old’s childhood coach revealed a story when Pant drove for an hour to apologize to him since the youngster upset his coach.

Tarak Sinha has played an integral role in Rishabh Pant’s meteoric rise in international cricket. As the head coach of Delhi’s iconic club Sonnet, where the young keeper-batsman spent most of his formative years, Sinha has closely worked with Pant and observed his rise. The southpaw would be next seen in action during the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton next month.

Tarak Sinha revealed that once, he got upset with Rishabh Pant during one of the net sessions at his club Sonnet, which is in South Delhi. With Pant not being able to sleep for the entire night, he drove for an hour to apologize to Sinha. On Sinha asking why he came at this time, Pant responded by claiming that he could not see his coach upset. Tarak also revealed that his family was upset with that since he was harsh on a young cricketer.

“Once I got upset with him during one of the net sessions at my club Sonnet which is in South Delhi. He couldn’t sleep for the whole night and knocked on my door around 3:30 am! I live in Vaishali (National Capital Region) and which is almost an hour’s drive where he was staying in Delhi. I was like at this time? Why? He said that he wanted to apologise because he could never see me being upset. That was touching as well as disturbing since he had to make that journey post-midnight. In fact, my family was so upset with me that I was harsh on the kid,” Sinha told News18.com.

Rishabh Pant needs to grow as a player and then in future selectors can think about those things: Tarak Sinha

Tarak Sinha further opined that Rishabh Pant has to establish himself more as a player since MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli had to do the same before being considered for captaincy. Sinha observed that the 23-year old did well as the Delhi Capitals’ skipper and for Delhi’s Ranji team; however, he opines there is a long way to go for the keeper-batsman before the selectors see him as India captaincy material.

“It’s little too early to say that. Pant has to establish himself first more as a player. If you look at the iconic players like Dhoni and Virat Kohli, they had to do a lot before they got the captaincy. Similarly, Pant needs to grow as a player and then in future selectors can think about those things. He has done reasonably well for Delhi Capitals in IPL this year and has led Delhi Ranji team to final as well in the past. Not that he is intimidated by additional responsibility but as of now he is a kid and, still a long way to go before he can be seen as India captaincy material,” he added.
