LSG saw Rishabh Pant stepping down from captaincy following two consecutive poor seasons in 2025 and 2026. Now, ex-India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has announced a few players who can replace him as the captain of the Super Giants.

Rishabh Pant, the senior cricketer, decided to step down from captaincy, and LSG management officially accepted his decision. Tom Moody made an official announcement and also claimed that it was a tough decision to make.

Rishabh Pant has struggled with batting form owing to the added responsibility of captaincy on him. He has amassed 269 and 311 runs across the two last seasons of the IPL, and hence, leaving captaincy might truly change his fortunes.

"A decision in the right direction." - Wasim Jaffer backs Rishabh Pant's decision to quit captaincy

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer recently opined that it is a good decision from Rishabh Pant or from the team's point of view to step down from captaincy. He praised Rishabh for his decision and asked him to focus on the game.

I think it’s a good decision, whether it’s the franchise telling him or his own decision. A decision in the right direction. You are doing wicketkeeping and are reactive and impulsive. A captain should control his emotions. It’s not his mistake but his nature.

"He shouldn’t be the captain. He needs to accept that he can’t do things like planning or handling players," said Wasim Jaffer on ex-LSG skipper Rishabh Pant while speaking on his YouTube channel.

Wasim Jaffer suggests two leadership options for LSG

The former Indian player turned commentator marked the likes of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram as the next probable candidates for the Lucknow Super Giants. These two are vastly experienced players and have played across the globe.

He struggles as a leader. There’s nothing wrong, just play as a player. Good decision and in the right direction. Whether Mitchell Marsh or Aiden Markram leads the side, they have done it for their national sides. Aiden Markram, especially, has a sound temperament and does good captaincy. They can choose someone else as well,he added.

Mitchell Marsh is the highest run-getter for the Super Giants in the past two seasons, and on the other hand, Aiden Markram has been leading the South Africans with some command. He is a very composed skipper and has led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape by example.

Jaffer names next MI captain for IPL 2027

Wasim Jaffer picked India's T20 World Cup-winning captain as the next captain of the Mumbai Indians squad for the upcoming season of the competition. Hardik Pandya is most likely to be snubbed from the role, following some disastrous seasons in the IPL.

Suryakumar Yadav would be one of the options. Rohit Sharma would be a backward [decision] because there is an age factor as well. Surya would be the right guy at this stage," claimed the ex-India star.

The Mumbai Indians have confirmed that the next captain will be appointed with insights from the legendary Rohit Sharma, who is the most experienced star in the league and has also led them to five IPL titles.
