Rishabh Pant’s white-ball career in jeopardy as BCCI issues "IPL" warning

According to the latest report, the white-ball career of the 27-year-old superstar wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is in jeopardy.

Reportedly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a massive warning to Rishabh Pant, ordering him to perform well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to save his white-ball career.

Rishabh Pant was not picked in India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 despite being part of the T20 World Cup 2024-winning team because he is currently recovering from an injury.

He picked up an injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test of the five-match series against England at Old Trafford in Manchester while playing a premeditated reverse sweep off Chris Woakes and under-edged the ball onto his boot.

The wicketkeeper-batsman looked in immense pain after suffering the blow to his foot and was immediately carried off the field. It was revealed that Pant had fractured his foot, but he showed unreal determination and walked out to bat injured and scored 54 runs for his team.

Since then, his injury has kept him out of action, and it was reported that the batter has been ruled out of the Asia Cup as well as the home Test series against the West Indies.

BCCI warns Rishabh Pant

Even if Rishabh Pant was fully fit, he was not a certainty in the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025, as the Kerala star Sanju Samson has been the first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in T20Is for quite some time.

Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma have been picked as the two wicketkeeper-batsmen for the Asia Cup, but both offer different roles as the Rajasthan Royals skipper bats in the top-order, while the Royal Challengers Bengaluru star is a finisher.

Coming back to Rishabh Pant, a News24 journalist, Vaibhav Bhola, has reported that the Indian team will follow the formula of three different wicketkeepers in three formats.

KL Rahul is looked at as the first-choice in ODIs, one among Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma is a frontrunner in T20Is, and Rishabh Pant is the No.1 pick in Tests.

As per a BCCI source, Pant will not be considered for white-ball cricket until he delivers good performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), reported the journalist.

Pant looked awful in IPL 2025 as he scored just 269 runs for LSG with the best of 118* and at an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.16. He last played T20I and ODI cricket for India in July-August 2024 against Sri Lanka. Rishabh Pant has been totally ignored for T20Is, but has remained as a back-up for KL Rahul in ODIs.

He was giving me a lot of encouragement - India star

Pant was part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 winning squad and played a key role in the triumph, but one player who was unlucky to miss out on the 15-member line-up was Rinku Singh.

Recently, Rinku Singh, who was India's standby in the T20 World Cup, revealed a heartfelt gesture from KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan.

"So this was the time when I wasn’t selected in the main squad — I was in the standby list. The team had already left, and I had to go for visa formalities.

"Sir (referring to Shah Rukh Khan) also had to leave the next day. My flight had already been booked, and I was about to leave — alone. Somehow, either Sir or Pooja ma’am found out, and they said I should travel with Sir, I was completely nervous — like, “I’m going to travel alone with Sir? How will I handle myself? What will I say? tried so many times to refuse,” Rinku told RevSportz.

"But once Sir had said it, how could I say no? Yes, there was a conversation in the car. He was giving me a lot of encouragement."
