Back-to-back defeats in Tests, multiple off-the-field controversial moments not only became burdens for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, but also for England Men’s National Cricket Team’s managing director Rob Key.

As the team was constantly under the spotlight, mostly for unwanted reasons, Key’s position in the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also became uncertain. Axing Brendon McCullum was a desperate move made by the team management to restore the team’s performance in the red-ball format.

Rob Key saved his job by removing Brendon McCullum from the Test team’s head coach seat

By removing Brendon McCullum from the Test team’s head coach position, it seems like Rob Key has secured his job at the ECB for now, as ECB chief executive Richard Gould backs him after the snubbing of the head coach.

The Test series defeat against New Zealand and subsequently sudden retirement of Ben Stokes rose speculations around Key’s future. During day three of the women's Test between England and India, praising Rob Key, Richard Gould reckoned that he is valuable for the England cricket board.

"He's got a really good brain. He's got a good communicator. He has got extraordinary knowledge of what goes on within our game in England. And he has spent the last four years in one of the most difficult jobs in English sports. And the amount of experience that not just he's amassed, but others within the team, is really valuable for us,” Gould said.

When will the ECB announce the Test team's captain and head coach's names?

England’s Test team is now in a unique situation as the team currently neither has a captain nor a head coach. With multiple Test series ahead in the year, the ECB will have to appoint new names for both of the vital positions. Gould stated that the board should make the appointments in good time.

“None of us are immune to results, whether it's coach, captain, director of cricket or chief executive. None of us are immune from results. The key is to make sure that whatever changes we make are the ones that are most likely to bring the most rapid resolution to results that we want,” he added.

Although the team’s performance in the Tests is questionable, Gould has trust in the nation’s talent pools. He is confident about restoring the team with the emerging talents coming out from the county championship.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould is satisfied with England's overall performance across formats

He mentioned that in both men’s and women’s cricket, England played significantly well, as the men’s cricket team reached a semifinal in an ICC event and the women’s team played the final in the recent Women’s T20 World Cup.

“We do not have a broken system in English cricket. We have an amazing talent pathway coming up through the counties. We've got great crowds, great facilities. Backroom in terms of science and medicine data, both in the men's and the women's game, is in an exceptional position,” the ECB chief executive expressed.

“We've reached a semi-final of the most recent men's ICC tournament, the final of the most recent women's tournament. So it's not baby and bath-water; it's about finding the precise areas where we can improve the quickest”, he added.
