The demise of former Indian coach and cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad has created a wave of mourning in the cricket world, with BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah paying emotional tribute to the legend. The BCCI on Thursday, August 1, confirmed that Gaekwad passed away in Vadodara on July 31, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Gaekwad’s passing was a significant blow to Indian cricket, to which he dedicated his life with unparalleled passion and commitment. He was celebrated not only for his remarkable career on the field but also for his influential role as a mentor and coach.

The BCCI President Binny expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Gaekwad's unparalleled dedication and passion for the game. The 1983 World Cup winner also emphasized that Gaekwad was more than just a cricketer, saying he was a beloved figure whose absence will be felt deeply.

Roger Binny said in the BCCI Media Release: “Aunshuman Gaekwad's passing is a great loss for Indian cricket. His dedication, resilience, and love for the game were unparalleled. He was not just a cricketer but a mentor and a friend to many. The cricketing community will miss him dearly, and his contributions will always be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones as they cope with this loss.”

Meanwhile, Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, echoed Binny’s sentiment, saying that Gaekwad's legacy of courage, wisdom, and commitment to cricket would be remembered for years to come. Furthermore, Shah extended condolences to Gaekwad's family, acknowledging the significant impact he had on the game.

Shah said in the same release: “The passing of Aunshuman Gaekwad is a profound loss for the cricketing community. A true servant of Indian cricket, he will be remembered for his courage, wisdom, and dedication to the sport. His contribution to the game has been significant, and he leaves behind a lasting legacy. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

A short highlight of Aunshuman Gaekwad's legacy

Notably, Aunshuman Gaekwad enjoyed a notable international cricket career lasting over a decade, representing India in 40 Test matches and 15 ODIs. Renowned for his solid technique and tenacity, he faced some of his era’s fiercest bowlers with remarkable resilience.

His most memorable innings include a valiant 81 against a formidable West Indies attack in Jamaica in 1976 and a gritty 201 against Pakistan in Jalandhar in 1983, where he batted for over 11 hours. He has also over 12,000 runs in more than 200 first-class matches, including 34 centuries.

After retiring, Gaekwad continued to contribute to Indian cricket as head coach in 1997, leading the team to significant victories such as the 1998 Sharjah tri-series and witnessing Anil Kumble’s historic 10-wicket haul against Pakistan in 1999.

His strategic insight and dedication extended to roles as a national selector, a member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, an Apex Council Member of the Board, President of the Indian Cricketers’ Association, a commentator, and a TV expert. The BCCI also honored Gaekwad with the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
