Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder and the incumbent president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Roger Binny, can reportedly block the takeover of Rajeev Shukla.

The 70-year-old Roger Binny could continue in the role of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president till the age of 75 if one big condition is met.

Roger Binny turned 70 in July

The 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder Roger Binny was appointed as the BCCI president in October 2022, replacing Sourav Ganguly.

He turned 70 on July 19, 2025, and there was uncertainty over his continuation in the role due to the age limit specified in the BCCI constitution.

Notably, any office-bearer who turns 70 is disqualified from holding the post, as per the Supreme Court-approved constitution.

This led to speculation that the BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla will soon be promoted and take charge as the president, at least on an interim basis.

The BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for September, and last month it was reported that Roger Binny could continue in a caretaker capacity until the meeting is held.

National Sports Bill could help Roger Binny continue as BCCI President till 75

According to the latest report in PTI, the National Sports Bill that was passed in parliament on Tuesday could help Roger Binny continue as BCCI President till 75.

However, this will only happen when the members of the BCCI state unit give a green light to it. Notably, 75 has been set as the cut-off age for office bearers of National Sports Federations, whose global bodies don't have any specifically mentioned age clause, like the ICC.

Also, the BCCI legal team is going through the National Sports Bill, even though it will not have any major impact on the board because it doesn't take grants from the government.

"Roger will continue till the board meeting in September. Whether he will get a fresh term depends on what members and other powerful people associated with the BCCI decide," a board source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"The national sports bill has just been passed, so, we have some time to study it and engage in proper discussion before taking any decision," the source said.

"There are other points to discuss in the bill for sure, and all the stakeholders, including senior players and coaching staff, will be consulted, particularly because cricket will be played at the 2028 Olympics," he added.

The 17th edition of the Asia Cup will be played from September 9 to September 28, with eight teams participating. Suryakumar Yadav-led India will be entering the competition as the favorites because of the calibre of players present in the squad.

India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.

The high-profile match between the arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be played on Sunday, September 14, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
