The recent sacking of Abhishek Nayar by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made many wonder about the move by the governing body.
Former Mumbai cricketer Nayar was sacked in the middle of the Indian Premier League, and it raised many speculations.
Abhishek Nayar got sacked because of the BGT disaster
Abhishek Nayar reportedly was removed because of the poor performance of the India National Cricket Team in the Tests. The blame for the team's horrible outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 fell on him, and hence, the BCCI didn't take long to remove him from the post.
The plan to remove Nayar from the post of assistant coach of the India National Cricket Team began ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
BCCI deliberately appointed Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach, and it was done so that they could sideline Nayar. His sacking came even after the Rohit Sharma-led side won the tournament undefeated in Dubai.
Rohit Sharma was not consulted before removing Abhishek Nayar - Report
However, in the latest development, as per the reports in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that Abhishek Nayar's sacking was the sole decision of the BCCI, and skipper Rohit Sharma wasn't consulted as he was earlier when Nayar was appointed. The report read:
"Abhishek's entry into the Indian team's support staff was done with Rohit's consent, but Rohit was not consulted before removing him."
Rohit Sharma and Nayar share a great camaraderie. The India National Cricket skipper is still working with him and also posted an acknowledgement story for the former assistant coach of the team on his Instagram account after he played an innings of 76* against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.
Gambhir didn't oppose Nayar's sacking, was more focused on keeping Ryan Ten Doechate and Morne Morkel
Recently, reports in Hindustan Times claimed that BCCI officials took feedback from senior cricketers, and some were not happy with Nayar's role inside the dressing room. Also, Gautam Gambhir didn't oppose his sacking as he was more focused on keeping Ryan Ten Doechate and Morne Morkel.
"Gambhir didn't oppose (Nayar's sacking). He had to go through a lot of negotiations to bring ten Doechate and Morkel on board. There was no way he was going to let them go this early," a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.
After getting sacked from the India National Cricket Team, Abhishek Nayar joined Kolkata Knight Riders again as an assistant coach. He was in the dugout during the game against the Gujarat Titans at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and would be keen to turn the fortune for the team.
The Ajinkya Rahane-led side are having a tough time in the league as they are in the bottom half of the table. It remains to be seen if they qualify for the playoffs of not.
