Mumbai Indians (MI) will enter the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season with high expectations and ongoing leadership questions. After a disappointing playoff exit last year, the Hardik Pandya-led side will face pressure to end their five-year title drought.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the fixtures for the first phase of the tournament. Mumbai Indians will begin their campaign with a home match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29.

They will then travel for away matches against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 4 and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 7. After that, they will return home to face the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 12. The spotlight remains on the team management for the new season.

Rohit Sharma Built the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League

Mumbai is one of the most successful teams in the tournament. Rohit Sharma built a strong side during his decade-long tenure as captain and led the team to five championship titles between 2013 and 2020. MI last won the title in 2020, and Rohit failed to win trophies in the next three seasons as captain.

The opening batter helped establish a winning culture that transformed the Mumbai Indians into a formidable force. Rohit is also the leading run-scorer in the history of the franchise. For MI, he has scored 5,876 runs in 227 matches at a strike rate of 132.22, including 39 half-centuries and two centuries.

Since the inception of the league in 2008, the veteran opener has scored 7,046 runs in 272 matches at an average of 29.73 and a strike rate of 132.10. Rohit is the second-leading run-getter in the tournament, behind Virat Kohli, who has scored 8,661 runs in 267 matches.

Despite stepping down from the captaincy, Rohit continues to be a key player in the dressing room. During the previous season, he scored 418 runs in 15 matches at an average of 29.86 and a strike rate of 149.29, including four half-centuries.

He has the ability to provide aggressive starts at the top of the batting order, which could be crucial for the franchise’s success in the upcoming season.

The Captaincy Switch That Divided the Mumbai Indians Fanbase

Mumbai Indians made a major transition when they replaced Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain ahead of the 2024 season. The decision immediately divided the loyal fanbase and created several early challenges.

During his first year as captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik struggled to unite the squad. As a result, the team finished at the bottom of the points table with only four victories.

The team showed significant improvement during the 2025 season. They won eight out of 14 league matches and secured fourth place in the standings. Mumbai Indians defeated the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator.

However, they suffered a five-wicket defeat to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2, which extended their title drought. Despite the initial backlash from fans, the Mumbai Indians' management continues to back Hardik as their captain.

Pandya won the IPL title with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 during his debut season as skipper and reached the final again in 2023. His overall captaincy record across franchises remains good, with a 59.32% win percentage in 59 matches.

Hardik Pandya’s Leadership Faces Its Biggest Test In IPL 2026

The upcoming season will be the ultimate test for Hardik Pandya and his aggressive leadership style. Unlike Rohit Sharma, who built success through calm consistency, Pandya relies on calculated risks and tactical flexibility.

He must quickly figure out how to maximize the potential of a squad that added only five new players during the recent mini-auction. The management believes his recent international success will translate into consistent franchise results.

Hardik Pandya played a crucial role in helping the Indian team win the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. These high-pressure performances highlight his mental strength, but he must now replicate that winning mindset in the franchise environment.

Mumbai Indians Cannot Afford Another Captaincy Controversy

The Mumbai Indians franchise needs to shift the public narrative back to on-field performances. Constant speculation about the leadership situation creates unnecessary distractions for a team chasing its sixth championship title.

The Mumbai Indians cannot afford another prolonged captaincy controversy if they want to seriously compete with the top teams in the tournament this year.

The Impact Player rule also adds another layer of strategic complexity to the upcoming season. Hardik Pandya must use this option wisely to strengthen the bowling attack and improve the team’s scoring rate.

Last year, the all-rounder often used Rohit Sharma as an Impact Player, which limited Rohit’s presence on the field. Hardik must now balance his role as a dynamic all-rounder and tactical leader to guide the franchise back to championship success.

If the Mumbai Indians fail to win the trophy or suffer another early playoff exit, the management could lose patience, forcing Hardik to either deliver results or potentially step down from the captaincy.

Alternate Leadership Options Within the Mumbai Indians Squad

The ongoing debate around the captaincy has led to discussions about alternative leadership options within the Mumbai Indians squad. If the management decides to move away from Hardik Pandya in the future, they have several capable players who could take on the responsibility.

Suryakumar Yadav is a leading candidate, especially after his recent tactical success while leading the India national team in the shortest format. He showed strong leadership during the T20 World Cup, managing tactical matchups and on-field decisions to guide the team to victory. However, within the franchise setup, the roles are reversed, as Surya follows the strategies set by Hardik Pandya.

Jasprit Bumrah is another leadership option for the Mumbai Indians. The fast bowler understands the pressure of franchise cricket and has vast experience at the highest level.

Although fast bowlers rarely take up full-time captaincy roles in the tournament, Bumrah’s experience and calm demeanor make him a natural leader who commands respect from every player in the squad.

Hardik Pandya Delivers Consistent Performances in the Indian Premier League

Hardik Pandya made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for the Mumbai Indians in the 2015 season. He quickly established himself as a match-winner with aggressive lower-order batting and useful pace bowling.

His explosive finishing played a key role in helping the Mumbai Indians win multiple titles. Pandya later joined the Gujarat Titans and won the IPL 2022 title in his debut season as captain before guiding the team to the 2023 final.

After returning to the Mumbai Indians, Pandya experienced a difficult 2024 season but bounced back. In IPL 2025, he led the team into the playoffs.

Overall, Pandya has scored 2,749 runs in 140 matches at an average of 28.34 and a strike rate of 146.93, including 10 half-centuries, with a best score of 91. With the ball, he has taken 78 wickets at an average of 31.95 and an economy rate of 9.18, with best figures of 5/36.
