India National Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to soon make his next big move, and this time too, Rohit Sharma is on the radar. Shubman Gill’s rise as India’s Test captain has reportedly convinced Gautam Gambhir to spring his new shock to the cricket world.
There is no second thought that Gambhir was behind removing Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain, and it forced Rohit Sharma to say goodbye to the format. Even the head coach’s influence was clear in Virat Kohli’s shocking retirement from the format he loved most.
Well, Suryakumar Yadav has already established himself as the T20I captain with adequate success in the format under Gambhir’s tenure. On the other hand, Gill is doing really well as captain in the traditional format of the game, and his impact is visible on the ongoing England tour.
Shubman Gill finalized as India's new ODI captain
The right-handed opener hammered two centuries and one double ton in the first two matches of the ongoing five-match Test series and led the Indian cricket team to a historic 339-run victory in the second Test against England at Edgbaston to level the Test series 1-1.
Now, ahead of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s, a Dainik Jagran report claimed that Shubman Gill has already been finalized as India’s next ODI captain. A top BCCI official has confirmed to the publication that Gill is going to take over from Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain.
The report also suggested that the Punjab lad will make a comeback as the vice-captain when the Men in Blue play their next ODI series. With the Bangladesh tour postponed, the Indian team will play their next 50-over matches on the Australia tour in October 2025.

Shubman Gill eyes Don Bradman’s records in England Tests
Meanwhile, Indian captain Shubman Gill is rewriting history in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. In just two tests, the young Indian opener has already scored 585 runs, including a sensational 269 and 161 at Edgbaston in his debut series as the captain.
He has already broken several big records, surpassing Virat Kohli’s highest score as Indian captain and Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian in a single Test. He also became the first Asian captain to score a double century in the SENA countries.
Now, with three tests left, Shubman Gill is on the verge of breaking some of the greatest milestones in test cricket.
The Punjab lad now needs just 225 more runs to break Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in a series as captain that he set in 1936–37. He could also break Bradman’s all-time record of 974 runs in a single Test series, for which he is just 390 runs away.
If Gill scores 415 runs in his next six innings, he will become the fastest captain to reach 1000 Test runs, beating Bradman's record of 11 innings. He has already hit three centuries in this series. Only Clyde Walcott (5) and Don Bradman (4) have scored more centuries as captains in a single series.
It was under Rohit Sharma's captaincy that Team India won the last 2 ICC events in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Removing Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain could come back to haunt the team big time.
