Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar made a massive statement on the captaincy of Rohit Sharma amid his struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He said that if the batter fails to get going in the last two games, he will step down as the leader of the team.

Things are not at all going right for Rohit Sharma in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The senior player has struggled to get going both as a captain as well as batter and this has seen him getting under more pressure and facing a lot of criticism.

Rohit Sharma struggles big time with bat and captaincy in BGT 2024-25

Rohit missed the first game of the Test series due to the birth of his child. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah captained the team and guided the team to victory in Perth. The regular skipper took charge of the team again in the Adelaide Test, but it wasn't the kind of outing he would've wanted.

Under Rohit, India faced a thrashing 10-wicket loss in the pink-ball Test. In the game, he wasn't at his best with the captaincy and also struggled to score runs in both the innings. He looked clueless while batting in the middle order and bagged low scores.

In the ongoing Gabba Test, Rohit had a similar fate. His captaincy was criticized a lot as Australia posted a massive total of 445 runs. However, after that, he didn't have a great outing with the bat as well, which made things worse for him.

If he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call - Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma

Amid all the struggles, Sunil Gavaskar came up with a massive statement. He is confident that Rohit will be playing the next two games but claimed that if he fails to get going, he will step down as the leader. Speaking to ABC Sport, he explained:

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” he said.

He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team - Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma

Sunil Gavaskar further added that Rohit Sharma is a conscientious cricketer and he wouldn't want to be a burden on the team. While highlighting the Indian skipper's love for the team, he added that he will step down if he fails. He elaborated:

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket.

“So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.”

Rohit Sharma would want to make a major impact with the bat and leadership in the last two games. It remains to be seen what will be his future in the longest format of the game.
