Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann made a big revelation on social media as he ignited the stir in the cricket world by naming his top five cricketers, whom he has had the privilege to coach on Sunday, July 21.
Lehmann, known for his keen eye for talent and experience in nurturing cricketing superstars, dropped a bombshell by unveiling an elite group of five players who have left an indelible mark on the game, and they are from Australia, India, South Africa, England, and Sri Lanka.
From Steve Smith to Kumar Sangakkara: Darren Lehmann's all-star list stuns fans
The modern-day batting maestro Steve Smith of Australia is leading Lehmann’s chart. Smith has consistently dominated the batting charts with his unparalleled technique and mental fortitude, especially in Test cricket. Smith is one of the modern greats of cricket and has an impressive record across all formats of the game.
Smith, known for his unorthodox batting style and incredible consistency, has played 109 matches, amassing 9,685 runs in 195 innings with the help of 32 centuries and 41 half-centuries to his name. With an average of 56.97, he stands out as one of the most reliable batters in the format.
Smith's prowess extends to ODI cricket as well, where he scored 5,446 runs at an average of 43.91 in 142 innings. The right-handed batter has also scored 1,094 runs at an average of 24.86 in 55 T20I innings for Australia.
The Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who is known for his effortless stroke play and record-breaking performances in white-ball cricket, also found a place in Lehmann’s top-5. Rohit is one of the most explosive and talented cricketers the game has ever seen. The Hitman has made a significant impact across all formats of the game.
Harry Brook among Darren Lehmann's elite top 5 cricketers
The stylish batter, who recently won the T20 World Cup 2024, has so far amassed 4,137 runs in 101 Test innings for India. Rohit has so far scored 10,709 runs across 262 ODI matches and 4,231 runs in 151 innings in T20I cricket for India.
England’s young batting sensation Harry Brook, whose explosive batting has already drawn comparisons to the greats, made the cut to the list after he smoked a stunning century in the second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
Brook is one of the world's most exciting young players and has so far represented England in 14 Tests, 15 ODIs, and 39 T20Is and amassed nearly 2500 runs in international cricket. The legendary South African batter AB de Villiers was among the top five cricketers in the world picked by the former Australian cricketer on social media.
The Proteas great, who was known for his innovative shots, incredible versatility, flair, and game-changing innings during his playing days, has nearly 20,000 international runs to his name. Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara, whose classical batting and impeccable record have earned him a place among the legends chosen by Lehmann.
However, the well-known coach has not mentioned any format while announcing his top five favorite cricketers. Notably, Sangakkara amassed nearly 28,000 runs in all three formats of the game in his illustrious career.
