With the World Cup done and dusted, the BCCI is reportedly set to sit down with chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma to discuss the roadmap for the next four years. India’s campaign in the World Cup ended in a heartbreaking manner.

Rohit Sharma was just one win away from leading India to the World Cup glory. However, India’s 10-match winning streak came to an end in the final with a six-wicket defeat against Australia. Rohit Sharma has received praise from all around for his leadership and selfless batting in the competition.

The BCCI is now set to discuss about the senior batter’s future in white-ball cricket in order to have more clarity, according to a report in The Times of India. The board will also discuss about few names who can be groomed as a captain for the future.

BCCI to discuss Rohit Sharma’s future:

The report stated that Rohit Sharma has already communicated to the selectors that he is fine with not being considered for T20Is. The right-handed batsman has not played a single T20I since leading India in the T20 World Cup last year. Along with him, Virat Kohli has also not played a T20I since India’s loss against England in the semifinal of the World Cup.

The senior batsmen are unlikely to make it to the T20I squad again. The board would now like to have more clarity on Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs. He will be nearly 40 by the time the next ODI World Cup takes place in South Africa in 2027. Before that, the biggest ODI assignment will be the 2025 Champions Trophy.

“Before the ODI World Cup, Rohit had communicated that he is fine not being considered for T20Is. The selectors have been investing heavily in youth in T20Is for the last one year. With the T20 World Cup happening in June next year, they are reluctant to deviate from that strategy,” a source told the news outlet.

The report also stated that the board and selectors will prepare a concrete plan for ODIs only after the next IPL and T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, will be looking to focus mainly on the Test format as of now.

“As of now, it seems Rohit will be focusing a lot of his energy on the Test format for the next cycle of World Test Championship which runs till 2025. Grooming a captain for the longer formats is a key part of the agenda. With Hardik Pandya prone to injuries, selectors may look for options in ODIs,” the source claimed.
