Rohit Sharma joins MS Dhoni in the elite club
After taking the field against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma has now led India in 1 Test, 6 ODIs, and 7 T20Is against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was India's captain in 1 Test, 11 ODIs, and 5 T20Is against Bangladesh.
Apart from Rohit, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have led India in two formats against Bangladesh. KL Rahul has not led India against Bangladesh in a T20I match so far. He is currently running out of India's T20I plans as well.
Rohit Sharma was also a part of the visiting Indian team in 2019 but Virat Kohli was India's captain back then. He also missed the one-off Test match against Bangladesh in 2017 due to injury.
Nidahas Trophy 2018
Rohit Sharma was India's vice-captain until 2021 when Virat Kohli was the team's captain. He led the Indian team against Bangladesh for the first time in a T20I in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy.
Nidahas Trophy is a T20I tri-series organized between India, Bangladesh, and hosts Sri Lanka in 2018. Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik famously smashed a six off the last ball in the final off the bowling of Soumya Sarkar to lead India to the title win over Bangladesh.
Rohit Sharma also led India in the 2018 Asia Cup later due to the unavailability of Virat Kohli due to injury. India and Bangladesh faced off once again in the final and the Men in Blue emerged victorious off the final ball of the match again.
Under his leadership, India lifted the Nidahas Trophy and Asia Cup in the same year which further solidified his credentials as a captain. During that time, Rohit was also a successful captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL and was at the peak of his career.
India's top order wobble against Bangladesh
Coming to the match, Rohit Sharma did not have a great start with the bat and was the first Indian wicket to fall. He was dismissed for just 6 runs by fast bowler Hasan Mahmud. The Indian captain tried to defend but the ball took the outside edge and flew to Najmul Hossain Shanto at second slip.
After the fall of Rohit's wicket, it started a collapse as Shubman Gill was also dismissed for a duck by Hasan Mahmud. Mahmud kept on testing the Indian batters and soon got the prized scalp of Virat Kohli.
Later, he also got the wicket of Rishabh Pant, who was looking good at that stage. India had lost six wickets but Jadeja and Ashwin steadied the innings together with a brilliant century partnership.
