Rohit Sharma makes a shocking 'didn't want to retire' statement after hanging up his boots

India captain Rohit Sharma came up with a shocking statement after he announced his retirement from the T20Is following the T20 World Cup 2024 win. He said that he didn't want to hang up his boots but the situation was as such so he had to take the decision. 

India captain Rohit Sharma called time on his career in the shortest format of the game after the side lifted the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the final by 7 runs and lifted their second-ever T20 World Cup, having won the title in the inaugural edition in 2007 under MS Dhoni. 

Rohit Sharma, who has been part of the Indian T20I setup since 2007, gave his everything in the T20 World Cup 2024 and all his hard work paid off as India ended their title drought. India won the Champions Trophy in 2013 and after that, they lost every single ICC event. 

As India won the tournament, Rohit Sharma announced that he would be retiring from the T20Is and according to him, it was the right time for him to leave and end his career. The India captain during the room press conference claimed that he loved every bit of it. He elaborated: 

"I've enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I've loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted - I wanted to win the cup." 

But after that in a drastic turn of events, he during the interaction with reporters, Rohit Sharma made a shocking statement and claimed that he didn't want to retire but the situation forced him. However, he again mentioned that it was the right time for him to say goodbye. He elaborated: 

"I didn't think that I would retire from T20Is, but the situation was such... I thought it was the perfect situation for me. Nothing better than winning the cup and saying goodbye,” 

Rohit Sharma leads from the front in the T20 World Cup 2024 

India captain Rohit Sharma was the best batter for his team in the T20 World Cup 2024. He led from the front and made sure that he took his team to winning totals in the tournament. He batted aggressively at the top and made sure that he provided his team with brutal starts. 

Rohit Sharma had 257 runs in 8 matches with a strike rate of 156.70. He also slammed three fifties in the tournament, with one coming in the semi-final against England. As a leader too, he ticked almost every box right and made sure he took his team to glory. 

Overall in T20Is, Rohit Sharma has been an incredible servant for his team. He ended his career as an all-time leading run-getter with 4231 runs. The skipper finished with five hundred, the most by a batter in T20I cricket. He also hit 32 fifties and had a career strike rate of 140.
